What should I do?
Interesting. It will let me start a new thread with MarathonMan_94, but not LaZboy77.
Well, I'm actually LaZboy77. Anyways, there's a marathon coming up this sunday; the Route 66 Marathon here in Tulsa. The only problem is 1) I haven't trained for it, 2) I haven't run a marathon since March, and 3) Route 66 is the bane of my entire existence. The first time I ran it it was super humid, about 75 degrees outside, very windy, and the course went in a straight line for like 10 miles. The second time I ran it the course had a little more variety...in a very bad way. Hill...after...hill. It was terrible. I told myself I would never run Route 66 again. Well, one of our running friends signed up to run the Route 66, but she dropped out because she didn't train for it either. My parents (mostly my mother) have been trying to get me to use her bib number so I can run the marathon. I originally said 'no'. However, I feel that if I did run this race I would feel a lot better about the long break I took since my last marathon. Also, since the race is on Sunday I probably wouldn't have to go to school on Monday; making Tuesday the only day of school that week due to Thanksgiving break. So...what do you guys think? P.S. The day my parents asked me if I wanted to run the Route 66 I had run 13.1 miles (which is a half-marathon) on our local trail. I can see why they think I could do it, but then again 13.1 miles is only half the distance. |

Re: What should I do?
Running a marathon cold turkey holds a good chance that you could get seriously injured.
The real question is: are you running the marathon, or finishing it? People participate in marathons all the time with no prior training, but to race without conditioning your body will put you in a state where you are very prone to injuries. It's entirely your choice - but expect cramping, and serious fading towards the last third of the course... and of course the obvious chance of pulled muscles as a result of no base. I would not recommend it, but knowing your history, I know for sure that you could finish it Also, curious: What is your half marathon time? source: I run half marathons/parent has run dozens of marathons |

Re: What should I do?
I think my best 1/2 time was 1:57.07 or something like that. I remember it was in Chicago and the plaque they gave way off: 2:00.07. They must have gave me the gun time.
My fastest full was 4:27, so I'm not a competitive runner. I would just be running it to finish; probably at a 11-to-12 minute pace. Last edited by MarathonMan_94; 11-12-2012 at 05:13 PM.. |
