Default Nintendo shutting down WiFi connection on Wii and DS

Article

I was planning to pick up MkWii for cheap and play some wifi, but it sucks that the end has come so soon. I played a lot of online MKDS too and truly had a fantastic time doing so; I'll be sad to see it go.

It's not just Mario Kart either; Pokemon DP/BW are affected as well. I just feel this is very underhanded by Nintendo, especially since the day of service termination falls just over a week shy of the release of Mario Kart 8. At least when Microsoft called it quits on the H2 servers, it was well after H3 had come out and Reach was on its way to being released.

I started that piracy thread a few months ago with the opinion that piracy is morally equivalent to theft, and I guess I still stand by that in most cases. In the music industry, albums are released at a standard price and are mostly made very available to the customers. Cases like these make me think a little more though. That features should suddenly be discontinued (especially at the time they will be) really make me feel like the industry is trying to milk me for my money and has too much power over how the consumer can enjoy their product. That's why emulation, though morally questionable, is noble in that it desires to give the customer freedom and features that the big corporations won't provide for financial reasons.

This'll be the first time I'll experience a sudden, forced separation from a community I've actively participated in since 2009.

I shed a tear for every single Wii/DS community, and all existing clans created only for the purpose of playing together. Same goes for the clan I am in, and all the friends I have made and met during this time.

It had to happen someday, still I say go fuck yourself Nintendo

Heard about this and it really blows.

Hopefully, the popular games, like Smash Bro's and Mario Kart Wii, people will find a way to continue playing online.

They did it with Double Dash, they will find a way with those games!

don't blame Nintendo. Blame GameSpy for being dicks as always. GameSpy has been bashing Nintendo for about a year now well, a while anyway. I'm surprised it hasn't happened sooner. Good on Nintendo to wait until after both the systems have been nearly phased out.

Sure, the Gamecube actually has Internet capabilities believe it or not.

That product is mainly for Phantasy Star Online (which is now offline officially), but you can use that device to pretty much tunnel a LAN connection to people around the globe.

Ever heard of Xbox Connect? It's sort of like that if you do know.

EDIT: Also Double Dash has a LAN mode that's not shown until you have said device.

Yeah I've actually played a bit of Halo 2 on it. It would be neat if there was a service like that for the wii

Wow, this is really not cool. I guess almost all multiplayer games will end up like this... sooner or later someone will shut down the server, and the game experience will be gone forever.

And the companies wonder why people constantly go behind their backs and pirate stuff and set up private servers... I certainly see no reason to be loyal to a company that will get rid of everything you like in a few years.

Well it isn't feasible for a company to maintain a service for a specific game after it's popularity wanes to the point where keeping the service up becomes cost prohibited. They'll still provide the service and hype it to hell and back, but after it's all said and done you'll need a dedicated fanbase to keep it up and running forever. Hey, at least fanmade servers of MMO's tend to be pretty fun.

This is an entire system (well, two) they're talking about though... and they still have a lot of people playing it. Nintendo, of all console companies, should know how older games can remain popular for a long time, and even get new jumps in popularity later on (look at twitchplayspokemon for instance, that was with the original Gameboy game and tens of thousands of people were watching for weeks). And honestly, if fewer people are playing, that just makes it easier to keep the servers running, since they need less bandwidth and storage space.
