Default The UK is leaving the EU

I'm not sure how many of you follow UK/European politics (I know I don't), but yesterday we had a vote on whether or not to leave the European Union. Known colloquially as 'Brexit' or 'British Exit'.

The votes have been counted since 22:00 last night and, as of right now, after around 33 million counted votes, the vote to leave has won. This is the biggest decision the UK has made in recent history. We're leaving the European Union.

Predictably, the value of the pound has plummeted to the lowest since around 1985.

Scotland is already talking about another vote for independence, with the idea that their newly independent country could seek to apply to the EU.

As for right at home for me, certain parties in Northern Ireland are talking about trying to get a 'united Ireland' with the Republic of Ireland, but Ireland are part of the EU and so there are obvious problems there.

This could also lead to the troubles coming back. During this referendum there was talk of having to put the border back up between the North and South of Ireland, with any trade between going through checks.

Worst case scenario, if Scotland gain independence and Ireland block us, I'm essentially going to be living in the middle, stuck in a country with no clear allegiance and people on all sides fighting to side with England, with Scotland, with Ireland or the European Union. It's going to be bedlam.

Thoughts?

If the UK is no longer a part of Europe does that mean we have 8 continents now?

European Union /= Europe. Europe is the landmass whereas the EU is a collection of countries. Not every country in Europe is part of the EU.

To be honest, I was convinced last night that Remain was going to win, but waking up this morning and seeing that leave has won was a little bit of a shock. Most of the people that I know voted remain and now can't quite believe it and think the world is going to end. Think that's a bit of a overreaction but it's still early days yet so who knows. I guess now it's all about the following questions:

What happens to Cameron now? What will he do now knowing his campaign has lost?
UPDATE: He's resigning. Hardly a surprise considering the outcome. A new leader by october as well, no doubt planning for that will begin very soon.

What's going to happen in terms of the economy? Obvious the pound has already dropped, but for how long? What about jobs?

Will it spark a wave of referendums with other countries? France and Greece already came to mind, The Netherlands as well are also thinking about it, maybe it could be the beginning of the end for the EU?

Truly a day in history for the UK here, but I guess it remains to be seen if it's a good day in history.

Keep in mind, the process of leaving the EU doesn't happen overnight. I heard it can take around 2 years, upon the duration of which Britain is still a part of the EU. Right now, stock markets are overreacting in comparison to the time it'll take for actual change to occur, but the effects will nevertheless be real and far-reaching beyond Britain's borders.

Also I think Cameron is resigning right around now...

Just a slip-up on the title. My mind isn't always fully awake at six in the morning. For those pernickety few it has now been fixed.

Was so sure we would stay. Well, here we go I suppose. Such a massive mistake in my opinion. And Now BoJo for PM? God, I'm not optimistic at all.

There has and will be short term economic effects.

Long term economic effects will likely be null, only because economics doesn't really care about anything but money in the end.

Social effects are anyone's guess but mine.

Political effects outside Europe are basically non-existent, especially in the long term.

As for political effects in and around the UK, I don't know, I'm pretty sure the majority of people in the UK don't know. We'll see. Hopefully legal changes don't become too much of a problem for people over there.

EDIT: I also don't see any effects of this being good in the long run because most of the pro-leave points that I found in my albeit very limited research seem to be more towards fear-mongering then actually fixing real problems with real solutions but I have no idea what the political situation is over there so hey.

Fucking yes! About time to say goodbye to arbitrary directives and regulations from Brussels. Hopefully this will challenge the great politicians in EU to think what went wrong. In an ideal situation EU will change to be less dominative against it's member countries.

True independency is a great richness.

More possible candidates:
+ Danes
+ Austrians

In future, EU will split and there might come a new or possibly a few smaller free trade unions but let's see

I hate to comment on the subject because A-I'm in Florida and have no real life experience anywhere near there and B-while I have made an effort to read up on the subject most of what I have been, cough, fortunate I'll say, to find online is hella biased in one direction or the other. I did find one link that seemed to put it as plainly as can be:

http://webcache.googleusercontent.co...trip=0&vwsrc=0

TRD, can you confirm that this is pretty much what the talking points are?
