Microsoft Silverlight
I've been seeing ads about it for a while, but after going to the website, I'm not sure what the heck it exactly is.
I'm thinking it's some sort of graphics enhancer, but their descriptions on the "What is Silverlight?" page are pretty vague. I'm kinda cautious about installing it because I'm not sure if it's gonna force me to default everything on my computer to Microsoft stuff (i.e., Internet Explorer instead of Firefox). Checking out the site more, I have discovered that their FAQ won't show up in Firefox... >_> So, I'm just gonna ask here, since this is the only forum I still use that I have more than 100 posts and am actually somewhat known by the community...

Re: Microsoft Silverlight
I downloaded it, but I have absolutely no idea what it does. Nothing has changed at all...

Re: Microsoft Silverlight
You have an odd sense of what's smart then. (Yes, I DO know what sarcasm is.)

He probably means that you're going to have to go in and tweak things yourself to see any changes.

Re: Microsoft Silverlight
After looking at the website, it looks like it's the begining of something really big for Microsoft. Probably since they just released IE8, it may only work for that, I dunno. Either way, this is deffinetly only for IE users.
What is Silverlight? Looking at it further, this looks like it's geared more for businesses, and making it possible for them to deliver better quality videos and media. Last edited by Sullyman2007; 03-9-2008 at 01:30 PM.. |

Re: Microsoft Silverlight
Essentially, Silverlight is Microsoft's version of Flash. It's a competing technology only recently released, and has yet to gain much ground, though I hear that it has some cool innovations not present in Flash. Silverlight looks promising; I can just see a big Flash vs. Silverlight battle approaching.
It's a good thing Synth used Flash for FFR, though, because SilverlightSilverlightRevolution just doesn't sound right. |

I thought it said 'Microsoft Synthlight' at first. >.> I really must be on here too often.

Re: Microsoft Silverlight
As long as it doesn't run off system core and ram, but actually utilizes the graphics card, I'm happy. Actually, I'll be amazed. That's the one thing that really irks me about flash.
Oh, and how everything above a 160 kb/s bitrate automatically gets downencoded to 64 kb/s (Unless you know how to get around it) |

Re: Microsoft Silverlight
I don't think there's direct GPU access for Silverlight yet. Even so, Silverlight does have slightly more advanced graphics capabilities than Flash, but I don't think there are any real compelling reasons to switch at the moment.

Smart consumer: someone who knows what something is before they buy/download/install/agree to it.
Ice Wolf: Installed with no prior knowledge. These two categories are mutually exclusive.

Re: Microsoft Silverlight
Won't download until I'm 100% sure it's safe and won't crash on me (which is why I don't have Vista nor IE8).

Re: Microsoft Silverlight
I've had it for several months and nothing's happened to me. It's pretty useless, though, because no website I've gone to has actually used Silverlight. There's not much point in installing it.
