Default So I'm getting a new computer

The reason I bumped this can be found on Post #8. Don't reply to the first post, I already bought the computer, and you'll be wasting your breath... er... I mean, text... [link for the lazy people]

I'm ordering a new computer on July 17th, but before I do it, I want to make sure that this is a good idea.

This computer is the one I'm getting.

There's a few things I'd like like to ask the awesome people here before I get it.

1] It has Windows Vista Home Premium. I've heard many scary stories about Vista, plus my mom's laptop has it, and that thing is unbearably slow. Do you think that with 4GB of RAM I'll be okay?

2] The video card is an Nvidia GeForce 7050. Does this card support a 4:3 monitor running at 1024x768 resolution? (The new computer doesn't come with a monitor, so I'll have to use my old one.) Would you consider that much of an upgrade from the Nvidia GeForce 6200 I'm using now?

3] Is there anything else you think I should know before purchasing this?

4] Do you think this is a good upgrade from my existing computer?

Thank you.
Let the discussion begin.

I couldn't say I know much about the computer themselves, but I currently have vista on laptop and run it with 2Gigs of RAM and a 1.8Ghz Processor, so you should be alright.

1. Vista runs fine on computers with 2+ GB of RAM. You're fine with 4.

2. My Nvidia GeForce 5200 FX on my old computer could support better than that on the same aspect ratio, so yes.

3. Make sure it fits what you're using. If it has hyper-threading, using it for games isn't a good idea. If you need it for school, get something cheaper. But other than that, it looks like it.

4. Yes. (My old computer had that same appearance, but was a lot more dated).

Hope this helps.

P.S ***************************************! I just bought a quad core a few months ago that was worse than the one you're buying, yet it cost over twice as much. =.=

Isn't the 5200 older than the 7050? I know that this was released when non-widescreen monitors were starting to be phased out...

I have this exact same processor and it's really good. When playing Crysis on very high settings the processor uses about 13% of its capacity. But for the graphic card, it does work with a 4:3 monitor on 1024x768. You should be able to run about every games but not all on max settings. I think this computer is quite good for the price and if I were you, I'd buy it :P

Great! Thanks to Jokee, Bynary Fission, and Raveren!
I don't play a lot of high-end games anyways. Older, less graphics-intense games are my thing. I experiment moderately with video encoding/decoding... and I browse the internet a lot.

I'm thinking this is gonna work just fine.
Thread's still open for anyone else to leave their opinion if they want.

When were non-widescreens ever phased out.

Just spend another $100 - $150 and get a decent graphics card.

Hooray for a two and a half week bump. I have more questions, and starting a new thread would be completely unnecessary.

So... I bought it.

But it's going on the other side of the house from where the router is currently located. I need to make sure this thing can use the internet so that I can play ma ef ef arz and chat with all you sexy beasts.

A guy on Yahoo Answers told me this:

My recommendation would be to purchase a D-Link USB adapter like the one below. It has 'N' capability and most closely matches your DIR-625 router. I think you will be very pleased with the performance.

Setup and configure the router first. Record the SSID network name and then write down the WPA/WPA2 encryption key. You will need both of these in order to setup the USB adapter.

I'd just like to see if anyone has any additional information to add... getting a computer in my own bedroom for privacy has been something I've been trying to do since I was about 13. XD

So, just go ahead and buy the adapter? Or something else...?
