This is sounding more and more like a suspension for insubordination for redorigami.

Year is almost over, I'll never have her class again, so why not.
I sent all three of your arguments; dore, dev, and rubix. Let's watch and see what happens.

Re: lol english
I sent an email to our school's AP English 11 teacher about 4 hours ago, she has yet to reply.
Ugh I hate waiting like 2 hours for a reply.

Re: lol english
Lol, I posted in this thread a couple months ago.
How many years has your English teacher taught for? I'm a bit shocked that this basic knowledge has somehow managed to escape her. |

Re: lol english
She's fairly new
And it looks like my argument is over. "Shawn: Unfortunately, your sources are incorrect. The underlined word coincides with the previous sentence, which expresses an action (something Danielle is actively doing). Therefore, it is in fact a verb. If the sentence did not coincide with the preceeding sentence, you (or your sources) would be correct. I am done discussing this matter with you, considering your disrespectful tone and the multitude of e-mails that I have received this afternoon. I will forward your e-mails to the English Department Chair and Principal. Perhaps Mrs. Gordon or Mr. Fitch can explain this part of speech in a "comprehensive" manner to you. May I remind you that 4 out of my 6 classes still need to take the final exam. Please do not discuss the exam questions with any other students. Sharing questions/answers is considered academic dishonesty and will result in a zero on the final exam. Thank You, Mrs. Flanary"

Re: lol english
i might be missing something but does it really matter if 'gift' coincides with the previous sentence?
this is a new sentence with new verbs, adjectives, and nouns... and lol at teacher stupidity. rubix and devs posts were golden. |

Re: lol english
Your teacher is a moron.
What was the preceding sentence? One sentence's breakdown has nothing to do with the breakdown of another. Nouns don't suddenly become verbs.

I don't even remember the one before it.
I don't have the test and if I bothered to ask her for the actual thing, at this point, she'll get pissed. I give up.

Re: lol english
No, I don't care what your teacher says.
Don't back down because of your teacher's retardation. It's a noun. Don't stand for a penalty you shouldn't receive. EDIT: Ah come on don't back out dude Seriously.

Re: lol english
"I apologize if I came across as disrespectful. I was trying my best to sound polite and be kind about this.
If you wish, I will just accept your explanation. I am sorry for bothering you." That's about the "tone" I've been using this entire discussion. I'm sorry, but how is that tone disrespectful in comparison with the final sentence in her first paragraph, which contains a threat.

Re: lol english
She doesn't want to admit that she's wrong.
My suggestion to you: Just drop the whole thing, you already know that you are right. It's useless beating a dead horse. Take an honors/AP English class next year, where you are more likely to have better teachers, otherwise cross your fingers and pray that you don't get another moronic one. Re: lol english
I understand her argument but she is still wrong. She is simply trying to cover her own ass. Regardless if she kissed the ****ing pope in the previous sentence, gift is still a noun. It is referring to an action that can be performed (based on what your teacher said). Just because its referring to an action, doesn't make it a verb.

You know the funniest part about her calling my tone disrespectful?
The subject line of this email is "No offense or disrespect meant"

Re: lol english
Rubix, it was something akin to
"Proper Noun preposition adjective noun preposition verb" And "gift" in this case is "referring" to the verb. As in "The verb from the previous sentence is a gift." And somehow, magically, that makes the noun into a verb because it "refers" to a verb. |

Re: lol english
I think your teacher is arguing something like this:
Person A: "I'm going to leap out of this window!" *Person A leaps* Person B: "Wow, that was an extremely awesome leap!" In the first sentence, "leap" is clearly a verb. In the second sentence, even though we're referring to Person A's leap, we don't say "extremely awesome" is describing the verb "to leap." In the second sentence, "leap" is a noun, referring to the ACT of springing/covering distance/whatever the hell you want to call it (see http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/leap). We don't say the second leap is a verb just because this sentence "coincides" with the previous one which used "leap" in the form of a verb. In the second sentence, "leap" is a noun and nothing more. Nouns don't "change" into verbs. They still maintain their structure under proper parts of speech. Adjectives modify NOUNS. Not VERBS. Adverbs describe verbs and adjectives. You can even look this **** up. Ask her if she agrees that "extremely" is an adverb modifying the adjective "valuable," and that this adjective is modifying the noun "gift." Adjectives cannot modify verbs unless you're teaching improper form. Your teacher is simply incorrect.

Re: lol english
Rubix, that's exactly the context of the question as I understood it.
The thing that upsets me the most about this, is that the inevitable consequence from the teacher going to the administration is that redorigami is going to get in trouble for his attitude, completely irrespective of the fact that he's absolutely correct and the teacher is educating the students -INCORRECTLY- Teachers providing incorrect information as fact should be a FAR more serious issue than a student daring to say so, but that isn't how it will end up. |
