Racial Slurs
I find them to be kinda dumb to be called racist for them. I mean, I say "spic" all the time and I'm hispanic. It's the same thing as calling someone "nig*a*. I don't see how they could be offensive in any kind of way as long as it's not used against the race itself.
What are your thoughts on this? |

Re: Racial Slurs
I don't use racist slurs. My mother and that entire family is made up of minorities including black and hispanics. My skin is white but I still identify with my hispanic background.

Re: Racial Slurs
While this rant focuses on swearing, it's basically the same thing as "bad words":
http://www.snipeme.com/archive.php?y...&rant=swearing It's really just a bandwagon of people who've seen the words used in negative connotations. It's like calling a black hole a racist analogy even when it's used properly and is not in any way offensive (like a black hole describing a situation where money is being taken in but "disappears" from the public and never gets out). |

Re: Racial Slurs
It also depends on the context. As the whitest dude in history (or at least in my unit lmao), saying ***** could get me killed. BUT. I say it when I'm with close friends (about half are black), and they're completely fine with it.

You can't really be comparing swear words to racial slurs

Re: Racial Slurs
Be smart about who you use certain words around lmao... simple as that.
I personally don't use them. It's a terrible habit to get into. I've seen so many people accidentally use racial slurs around people that took it offensively. Things usually pretty ugly from there.

Re: Racial Slurs
Why not? Both aren't recommended to use (in certain contexts - like Torrent said).
Swears also have a history behind them, just like how you said racial slurs do. I'm not sure what point you're trying to get to here. |

I think it depends on who it's said around, and the context its used in.

Re: Racial Slurs
Swearing much more accepted though, as bad as that sounds. Try this:
Go into a heavy populated area, like a subway or a large bank or something, and yell "SHIT" at the top of lungs. The next day, go into the same place and yell the n-word. gr8 experiment, i suggest everyoen does it |

Re: Racial Slurs
Very true. But still, racial slurs are seen as more controversial because of how they're directed towards a particular group of people. Swear words, on the other hand, aren't meant to offend any particular group of people thus more socially acceptable.

Re: Racial Slurs
Same with "porch monkey." I used to work with someone (who is Hispanic) who asked a co-worker (who is black) if PM was a bad word. Nothing happened since the store was closed, but as soon as the closing manager (supervisor) found out later that night (who is also black), he was sent home and fired the next morning when the Manager and GM found out.
There is pretty much zero tolerance at my work. Last edited by DotKritic; 03-15-2011 at 10:50 PM.. |

Re: Racial Slurs
IMHO, they're only funny if used in the right context, which is rare.
This is not to say that I do not curse, however. People who know me well know that I curse like a sailor. For a while I had a habit of using racial slurs, but I've backed off, because it offends people and it cost me a couple of friends.

Re: Racial Slurs
it's only racist if you have racial intent yourself, which is impossible to judge when talking to a complete strangers. I say nig [A] all the time just because it's somewhat taboo to some people and it has an awesome ring to it lmao. I'm not gonna pull the "I CAN SAY ***** CUZ I HAVE BLACK FRIENDS DURR" card, but if you know the person in question I don't see why this word is a big deal these days.

Re: Racial Slurs
From my perspective ( because I'm half black) I'd say it's still a big deal because of slavery, and the way white men treated blacks for hundreds of years.
Remember it was only in like the 60's that black people obtained equal rights as everyone else. so When looked at this way it really hasn't been long enough for it to not be a big deal still, though maybe in a few hundred years

Re: Racial Slurs
maybe where you live there's more prejudice, but around here it's pretty well accepted. slavery was a big deal centuries ago but I guess Canada has a different history (a good deal of african americans took refuge here before the civil war)

Re: Racial Slurs
I just don't use them. No reason to, and nothing good can come from them.
