I'm not upset with twitch, but I figured I'd bandwagon and try hitbox out for viewing other streams, and by God it's much better. I'm not abandoning twitch, but I'll probably be streaming on hitbox since I like the feel a bunch more. I'll be excited to see hitbox develop their infrastructure to accomodate for their increased user traffic.

Twitch has its issues that it's trying to fix. Hitbox has shitty servers and they'd be stupid not to upgrade soon. Their site layout and highlight system could use some work too. What it comes down to for most people is if they're already established on Twitch, they're not going to want to migrate.

The reason why Hitbox would be the goto site right now is no delayed stream so that chat can interact with their streamer.

That's enough reason for me to make the switch, but i'm still streaming to Twitch while I plan to migrate to Hitbox. Don't actually care at all about viewer count, I just care about the people who actually want to watch my stream who might not know I'm moving. I'd be an asshole just to abandon my userbase like that I think.

tldr twitch isn't bad but its stream delay is so hitbox is the way to go unless you care about your viewercount$.

I'm curious if it is possible to stream to both hitbox and twitch at the same time (and if such a thing is possible, if my connection & computer can handle it)

I'd imagine that's really the best way to go about things.

I don't see why not, but you are uploading to two seperate servers so you'd need a good upload connect speed.

Well not really, probably 10 megabit upload would be fine, but internet in the US is shit.

If you're using Xsplit, all you have to do is just click broadcast on the two you want.

But yes, that'll mean you will be uploading twice the amount.

I'm super excited to be able to interact with chat in a matter of seconds rather than minutes :)
I really never understood why Twitch did that. Yeah, okay, they wanted to change the streaming format, but if it caused that much trouble, how could it be worth it? Just deal with the increased data or bandwidth or whatever, buy more servers if you have to. It's the cost of doing business as a stream site.

Fun fact: when NASA was talking with astronauts on the moon, their delay was ~1.3 seconds each way. So they literally had an easier time talking with moon-walking spacemen than streamers do with their chat.

k that's not really a fair comparison. the astronauts have access to much better technology and are using it for more serious purposes

Not to mention you're comparing direct radio signals (speed of light and whatnot) to digital wire transmission signals, its an unfair comparison based on that alone. Much better technology? Lol no.

not to mention the average astronaut is worse at league of legends than the average league of legends player

think about that

Given the astronauts upbringing, I actually doubt that statement is true.

Fiber is literally speed of light and stuff like ethernet uses electric signals that is just 'a bit' slower. Anyway, 1s delay is actually a hell lot, if I don't get a really bad route my latency with US servers is between 100~200ms. Even against Asia servers is around 400ms.

if all astronauts play league of legends and not all league of legends players are good, then which of the following is true:

a) not all astronauts are good at league of legends
b) not all league of legends players are astronauts
c) not astronauts of league are good at all legends

Latency is pretty much constant and based on actual distance of your connection route. Streaming is only heavy on bandwidth but that's irrelevant to effective latency.

The only other thing that would make a difference is if twitch does some significant processing (like applying the copyright thing on livestreams) before setting up the stream for viewers, but there's nothing that really justifies it.

There are many reasons a minimal 1~2s delay would be desirable for the streaming service, I'm just pointing out that it's not a question of connection infra-structure to build the streaming pipeline.

Yeah, that's how it should be, and twitch used to do it that way. I think at some point they changed to a different streaming format, which puts a chunk of frames into one block and sends out those blocks instead of sending the stream out continuously. Of course the size of the chunk determines the absolute minimum latency, because twitch's servers have to wait for the whole thing to be done before they can send it over.

Considering that it was literally only a couple of days between having streams with great interaction and having streams with 30+ second delay, it's definitely the change of format, and not some kind of data/speed issues they're having.
