Default Lag getting to you?

It seems like everything is going at snail pace. Is this just a busy night, or is someone trying a "ping of death", or is it just me?

I have been waiting 30 seconds to a minute for every page. I have DSL also and it is functioning great. It is the only site to be doing it too.

Here's an idea: outlaw signature pictures. At an average of 10KB apiece (conservative) and, say, 10 regulars using them (that's probably conservative), and you have 200 people online at a particular given moment. Considering it's the middle of the night in America, even this may be conservative. Let's assume that roughly 200 people come and go per minute (since the majority of people come and then leave). This equates to 200*(60*60*24)*10 = 172,800,000 KB or 172,800MB theoretically saved in one day. Even if you want to take ONE PERCENT of this number as the people who look at the forums, it's still 1,728 MB or 1.72GB of bandwidth saved PER DAY.

And remember, I'm being conservative with my numbers. The real number could be over 2GB. Goodbye bandwidth issues

No, FFR is not hosting many of these pictures, but it still must cache and log all of these pictures because it's running the forum software, so you still have the problem. .

As far as I can tell (guesses about FFR's traffic, having a pretty good grip on forum traffic, and experience), the forum takes less than 5% of FFR's total bandwidth, becuse the game itself is not only used more, but transfers way larger files.

But I'm pretty sure Synth owns his own line for his webhosting company, so actual bandwidth is a negligable issue. What's slowing the site down is the time the servers take to process and respond to a request.

(p.s. I guess i got here too late for the lag)

If the servers weren't bogged down, it wouldn't lag. I sincerely doubt that the servers don't have enough horsepower, or otherwise this would be a chronic problem.

What's your thought on the cause?

I think 500+ users of any kind are enough to bring two dual xeons to their knees. You have to remember that the lag is only happening at peak times.

Well lag also depends on what type of computer you have. If you have a sh**ty computer that hasn't been upgraded in years (you should be shot), you will get lag up the a$$. But if you have a newer, faster computer then lag should not happen, guessing you are a broadband user. Anyone with a 56K modem and complaining about lag should get hit in the head.

Monday I leave for boot camp

Figuring out what happened last night. We can handle lots and lots of connections. I am not worried about that. From the looks of it we started getting httpd defunct errors on the server due to logs that were too large (over 2gb log files) or we had a DOS attack. Will let you know when I find out.

Cheers,

Synthlight

We aren't talking about lag compared to other sites, we are talking about lag on this site realtive to other days. I never saw any lag other days, or maybe just a little. Saturday the First of November was a heavily lagging day. It wasn't all the time, though I am still seeing small remnants of lag still, but it seems to have dissipated.

And thanks for the quick response Synth.

I agree completely. The forums seem to be almost completely back up to speed. Let's hope we didn't have some idiots trying a "Ping of Death", because that means they will try it again. Some people are such idiots.

Thanks for stating the blatantly obvious.

SoTN: I wasn't aware that a 'peak time' was 12:00 AM CST. In any case, my point still stands that if the servers were the problem, we'd see lag issues EVERY DAY around the same time.

I sure the hell hope it wasn't a DoS attack. People who DoS are the scum of all things hacking. I was trying to convince myself that those idiots didn't exist anymore.

*points you to the stats page*

Logs? So simple, yet so deadly.

Ddos? I'm amazed that people still do this. If that's ture, I have a vague feeling that port 7777&7778 will have an unusual number of hits on it.
