Default What do you think is the best gaming generation?

I would definitely say the 6th Generation of consoles (PS2, Gamecube, Xbox, Dreamcast, PSP, DS, GBA) which lasted from 2000 to 2008

This was the era when budget, graphics, and creativity reached an equilibrium. You could make a amazing game with fresh mechanics and good graphics for a few million dollars. Games like Tokyo Extreme Racer, Star Wars Battlefront, Devil May Cry, God of War, Pacman World 2, Every FF game that generation, Persona 4, and a ton of other games are good examples of this

The amount of "underrated" or unknown games from this generation is probably the highest I've seen of any gaming generation. I've been playing games from this generation since when I could hold a controller and I'm still finding great games I've never heard of or rediscovering games I played a long time ago

Tokyo Extreme Racer
S.L.A.I (Steel Lancer Arena International)
State of Emergency
Manhunt
Etc.

Among other reasons but I don't want to make this too long. What is your favorite gaming generation?

Whichever one Celeste falls into, because it's the best game ever made.

Otherwise Nintendo 64 era.

SAME. I used to LOVE my PS3, but the disc drive broke back in 2017 while I was playing COD Advanced Warfare. I still use it as a makeshift PS2

As for my Wii I still play it religiously

I grew up on this gen along with the 6th gen so I hold both generations in special places in my heart

Worst part about this gen is that most modern gaming trends that people hate now started near the end of this generation

the best gaming generation started immediately after the gaming crash of '83-'85 and we are still in that generation
otherwise insert arbitrary gen console here that was played during childhood and can be looked at fondly thru the lense of nostalgia

Any games that came out from 1985-2013 or so.

After this point games just had problems that I can't ignore but a good game will still grip the hell outta me.

I grew up with the Wii and a DSi, so to me the 7th generation is the best. I have a lot of fond memories playing Mario Kart Wii and LEGO Star Wars as a kid. I still have my OG Wii and I still play it sometimes. It has so many great games.

I like the 6th generation a lot too, the GameCube and PS2 have some great rhythm games. DDR Mario Mix and Taiko: Drum Master are pretty fun. Even MC Groovz Dance Craze. (Okay, maybe not that one.)

Guessing how you are 31 I guess that your favorite gen is the 5th-6th gen

I could make a mina-styled thesis paper on why the 6th Generation of consoles is the best

i rly dislike the console based generational stuff since genre-defining video games have been released during every wave of consoles since the nes. my opinion is that the 8-bit era that began after that crash is what started pushing video games from mechanical skill+visuals (mostly designed after arcade games aka please die so you can feed us more coins pls) into the artform that it is today
but if I had pick a generation, it's whichever the dreamcast was from due solely to skies of arcadia

mane I would totally buy a Dreamcast JUST to play Sonic Adventure. the game is GREAT on DC but pretty mediocre on Gamecube and every other console

I am fine with the generational idea because certain trends ended or started during certain console lifespans. Microtransactions lasted from around 2011 to now, the early days where devs didn't know how to work with 3D games ended when the PS2 and DC came along, online play exploded in use around 2005 when the 360 came out, etc. Its the same reason why historians divide history into eras

there is no best generation or era, because there are great works to be found in all of them

i barely know any games before 5th gen ngl. but for the ones I got to play through, I'd rank them 6 > 5 > 7 > 8. I can't really say much about 9 yet cuz I don't buy many new games nowadays lol

but for me, the late 90's to early 2000's was my favorite era. xbox 360/ps3 days were also great, but games have definitely been losing their spark nowadays with companies feeling comfortable releasing unfinished games cuz they know people will buy them anyway...

OG Xbox/Gamecube/Dreamcast/PS2 generation for sure. There is too many great games to court like Super Mario Sunshine, Halo Combat Evolved. God of War, Sonic Adventure 2 & etc. Plus, This generation also marks the beginning of Online Play becoming the norm for next and future generations to come.

This. So many classics on all those platforms. I also think that generation also had the most a e s t h e t i c look imo. Idk why, but I go nuts over that late 90s to early 2000s look. Games like Jet Grind Radio, the Dreamcast Web Browser (lol) and beatmania (US), that kinda stuff. Also the music of that generation was awesome.

This is facts. I feel like gaming isn't really that fun anymore with how bad a lot of new games coming out are. Even if they're aight they still feel kinda soulless. Like they're lacking something.

I'm a 2D fanboy... so I'm tempted to go with either:

- Fifth generation (PSX and Sega Saturn, for gorgeous pixel-art in numerous 2D games)
- Fourth generation (Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo)
- Indie PC gaming (I guess that's cheating, but there's been a huge renaissance in 2D gaming)

Meh, I think that's a lazy argument. It's hard to consider everything that happened since '85 as homogeneous, there's bound to be some things you value more than others in there. I mean, even within '83 and '85, there's been a huge culture change that could count as 2 distinct generations.

I get where you're coming from, but I hope you're not including indie gaming in that statement. Indie gaming in the past 10 years easily reaches the heights that were reached in the sixth-gen. Even my favorite shoot-em-ups and rhythm games are indies right now (hint hint)

Hot damn... Honestly, this past generation will be tough to beat. My heart is more with retro gaming in general, but I think the last 7 years or so have graced us with a bit of everything we could wish for.

those things with value are defined by the talents behind them, not the consoles they were released on
