Default I'm sure this has been asked a million times but

Why do we need artist informal permission to chart their songs when we generate zero profit and don't actually distribute the song?

god forbid we listen to something for FREE when there's tons of other sites that allow us to do that already...

because some artists change what and how they want their stuff to be distributed on the internet. Getting permissions from the author protects that right for us unless they directly address us to take it down. Otherwise, random people can just come to the website, make a claim that they never allowed this stuff on this website, and threaten lawsuit or cease & desist the entire site of FlashFlashRevolution, because it's being used without their permissions.

A long time ago when FFR was still a child, we didn't have artist permissions, we just put whatever we could get our hands on into the engine, and then stuff like this happened. It barely happens at all anymore now that we have a giant list of permissions. (Check the FFR Song List on the website, the first 1000 or so songs on the engine compared to the rest of the songs in-game, and see how many track numbers are missing in each area.)

Ah thanks
Does it have to be federally registered in order to infringe if you're not generating profit?

If I remember right, and I'm not 100% sure about this, but the reason there's so much missing files in the 500-1100 range is because some of these files were part of the old widgets (they couldn't be played directly from the Legacy engine but they were listed in the database anyway) and were removed at the same time the widgets got taken down. You can still see the song stats using Wayback Machine if you know their ID. For example : http://web.archive.org/web/201108170....php?level=493

edit : And it's still possible to "load" any widget by right-clicking and pressing Play to see the menu.

In my opinion newgrounds songs should be able to be used I mean the audio section was actually intended for flash games. However we must ask permissions for everything unfortunately

I'm pretty sure we don't need to ask the artist for permission on Newgrounds. We just do it as a courtesy thing

So, we can use songs on newgrounds? Because I have some really nice gems that are perfect for FFR, but the songs are like 10 years old and the authors have left the site a long time ago.

So long as its filed under CC you should be good. Be sure to make surewhat kind of CC license its filed under as there are different kinds. For example if someone releases a song under CC but has it restricted so that you can't modify the song then you will not be able to cut the song and must step/submit the whole song(this is the case with our black mages permission)

If you alter, transform, or build upon this image, you may distribute the resulting creation only under a license identical to this one.

I guess that is cool, since we don't use the cut songs for commercial purposes either?

Yeah, all newgrounds songs in their audio section are good to use under CC. I remember asking about that a long time ago and some admin confirmed it

I'm pretty sure everything in the Newgrounds portal is licensed under Creative Commons and since this site is non-profit it's all game.

Which means someone should step this song

EDIT: lmfao I left this tab open for like an hour, man im dumb

was personally thinking of stuff more like this

http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/6012
http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/92222
http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/226637

They could make for some interesting files.

I don't think many songs were even removed, and some of them seem like they're from newer times with permissions, like the 3!OH!3 and All Time Low, and a bunch of Light files as well as one A Black Rose Burial song and one All Shall Perish song.

http://ffr.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Removed_file

The only songs I can remember being removed for permissions reasons were Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 7 Battle.

Worth noting that a large chunk of the stuff on hi19's list was actually never public.

I remember playing the password songs way back when I was a stupid 10 year old... How did I find those fun?

I also remember that I never could get PWND to work and to this day, I wonder what the song sounded like.
