Well, that's really quite a twist.

This idea that companies should pull out of E3 because it's not worth the money put into it had to start from somewhere. At some point in time, someone had this idea, and decided to speak out about it.
The question is: Who is that person, where does that person live, and how shall that person be punished for breaking hundreds of thousands of hearts?

Some comments from the slashdot write up of this:

Quote:
Remember, E3 is NOT supposed to be a convention. Its a PRESS event. GDC is a convention. It has "convention" in the name even. The general public is not invited, though generally anyone who wanted to go could get in. I've always thought its a pretty terrible event and generally not a good face for the industry as a whole. Most of the real stuff happens behind closed doors, and a lot of the big publishers have their own press days anyways.
Quote:
E3 represented everything that was wrong about the games industry. The hype. The focus on graphics. The sexualisation. The sequelisation. The CG sell. The marketers.

Playing a video game can be a serene repose from the world, not unlike a quiet read of a good book. But you'd never gather than from the Festival of the Casual Gamer that was E3. There games are presented like six-packs and waxed over automobiles. E3 was like an arms or car show. Games deserve better.
Also, E3 is not cancelled, only being downsized.

PHEW

That scared the hell out of me. It's still bad news as G4 will not be able to host it yearly E3 Live shows as it had before because of the more "closed-door" attitude now.

OmegaNoxim: okay, let's put it this way.
OmegaNoxim: E3 being cancelled is like when you're a little kid and you LOVE Christmas and then one day as you're growing up, someone finally tells you Santa doesn't exist. It's not a big deal, but all the same your heart feels a little hurt.
Wi LLW EEVE RFLY: LOL
Wi LLW EEVE RFLY: i guess

Personally, as a child growing up in the 90s, my way of staying in touch with the latest in video games was magazines like Nintendo Power and Game Informer. And every time the E3 issue came around, I would sit down on the floor by the magazine rack in Tom Thumb and read through the articles with fascination at all the amazing pictures of the event and the to-be-released games. And while I never seriously considered going to E3, I always thought, "Wow, that would be soooooo cool of a thing to be at." I'm 17 now, and that dream had been long forgotten. But, ya know? I read this news, and somewhere deep down I'm pretty saddened by this.

P.S. Don't buy the "it's just downsized" stuff. E3 as we know it is gone.
"Sources said that rather than fill the 540,000 square feet of the cavernous LACC, the show will take place at a location that would support exhibitors in meeting room space only, with companies showing their wares to a select group of attendees numbering in the hundreds rather than thousands."

I kinda liked E3, just for the fact that all the companies let out their big suprises.

Now info is just going to leak out intermitantly on the internets.

Even though E3 didn't really do anything, it was one of my favorite
parts of the whole gamer thing. A huge show of all thw big companies
going head to head. I'll miss the flashy-ness and the excitement i
got when i saw pictures, thinking that i may be able to go one day.
But, the internet can do all of those thingsa without costing nearly
as much.

I think it's a pretty good idea. After reading the IGN reports every year it seems like it's always really crowded and hectic. This way the people up top can get in and really give us in-depth reports on the games without crazed E3 people running around everywhere. I guess it would kind of suck if you wrote for a smaller video game website, though.

It was a PR spectacle, although I always found time to get to talk to developers seriously about their games. That was my favorite part. Losing to the guy who monikers Gabe from PA at Pacman for a set of collectable toys at the Namco booth two years ago could be a close second.

It was a rather odd affair, and honestly I couldn't understand why it was so crazed, like a thousand casinos without walls next to each other. But hey, I had a great time. As for it being expensive to attend, I think I would spend a total of 50 bucks each year, spent on food and gas. if you couldn't afford that then you shouldn't be going. If you have to pay for a badge to go, then well, y oushouldn't be going either. It will make things easier for smaller game companies to compete and get their news and games out, instead of being sequestered in Kensia Hall.

I figure that I can be down with the downsized version, seeing as it is still going to deliver the news and such, though I find it unlikely I'll be able to go. Oh well. At least now there won't be dry spells when people hold back as much in the months leading up to E3.

I think the best news here is that the E3 date won't be the only big date for releasing info. The limited-info-until-E3 thing causes 2 big problems, I think. 1) Companies are rushed to have things by E3. This makes a lot of the things you see not comparable to what the company will have as a finished version, or you may just not see anything, and rather than show it when they're ready, they wait until NEXT YEAR. This leads me to 2) intentionally delaying of information. Rather than tell us, they keep it a secret for E3. Hopefully that doesn't happen much anymore.

While I was waiting around at my sister's apartment before work, I was watching AotS and they were talking about it. Everybody seemed agreed that E3 dying was kinda sad, but ultimately good because the goodness of E3 would be spread out through the year, which means we wouldn't have surges of "omg I want 20 new games that are awesome but can't buy them all now" and then "wow every game released sucks lately" slumps later on every year.

So I've gone completely slack-ass and haven't done any work on creating games. =(

In less-depressing news, I got a job for an online business (which sells non-electronic games, of all things!) which has taught me a lot about marketing online and all that jazz.

So now I'm on Twitter @NoahWright.
And I write the blog for their website.

Plus I do cool programming in-house that you'll never see. =O
