Doom 1 / Doom 2 Nightmare Mode Thread
ITT we try to beast the original versions of Doom and/or Doom II (PC versions) on Nightmare Mode and share our progress, strats, findings, etc.
No hacks, no cheats, no workarounds, no exploits, no quicksaves, none of that stuff. Also, it'd be ideal if people avoid copying strategies from online videos or guides or whatever, but I can't stop you. IMO it's more fun to discover stuff from the ground-up. __________________________________________________________ In this case, I suppose we have a few different runs worth considering: Doom: Episode 1: Knee-Deep in the Dead (8 main levels + 1 secret level) Episode 2: The Shores of Hell (8 main levels + 1 secret level) Episode 3: Inferno (8 main levels + 1 secret level) Doom II: Hell on Earth (30 main levels + 2 secret levels) Last edited by Reincarnate; 03-17-2015 at 12:41 AM.. |

Re: Doom 1 / Doom 2 Nightmare Mode Thread
Are secret levels normally included in this sort of thing?
(I think they should be included, but I am curious what others think here) |

Never played Doom, don't think this would be a good way to start.

Re: Doom 1 / Doom 2 Nightmare Mode Thread
If ya never played Doom, never fear!
If you happen to find a copy of Doom (and trust me when I say they're extremely easy to find by basic google searching) I recommend playing on Ultra Violent, the difficulty that's not as bat shit insane as Nightmare but still very challenging. Reason is because, well... Doom is about the feeling of helplessness... and of course fragging your way through hordes of Hell's Spawn. I think Ultra Violent conveys that very well. Also... it's because many custom WADs and Mega WADs assume you can deal with Ultra Violence. I mean, there's some that do try to design gameplay from every difficulty (excluding Nightmare), but for the most part... yeh. |

Re: Doom 1 / Doom 2 Nightmare Mode Thread
I'm working on getting D/DII on my computer and running but once I do I'll be doing some playing. I may try some speed runs on different difficulties too, though I know that isn't really the point of the thread.
May make video recordings while I do it, I'm sure it'll be entertaining overall.

This should totally just serve as the overall Doom thread for FFR, but for rubix and myself and any others who intend to take their game to the next level and try to be among the gods who have beaten doom on nightmare, this thread should share that purpose as well and will be my main focus when i'm able to play. What I personally will try to do is work on speed running the game on ultra violence as it is intended until i'm averaging 35 min times or lower and then work on super optimization to keep up with the onslaught that is nightmare. But yeah, like charu said, don't play this game on anything other than ultra violenece (or nightmare if you're trying to get that gold star on your resume) seriously though, don't be a chode. Even if you find yourself getting mercilessly wrecked, you can't truly learn doom unless you start off on ultra violence. My fuckin' grandpa player doom on ultra violence for god sake. Also rubix, I think secret levels are included? but you might want to check doomworld forums to be double sure. I can pop in my fave doom streamers chat and ask |

Re: Doom 1 / Doom 2 Nightmare Mode Thread
Pretty sure I could run Doom I Ep 1 Nightmare with the secret level no problem. When it comes to Ep 2 etc. I would probably get lost and run out of ammo in a random certain map.

Re: Doom 1 / Doom 2 Nightmare Mode Thread
Yeah, it's like ultra-violence with random spawns, been there before. The main issue in these runs is ammo and losing too much time which makes mobs spawn that don't necessary give you ammo back. Of course, you can just ignore them and keep going for the goal, but if you don't know where to go rip. The game gets a lot harder in the later episodes too. Ep1 is fairly friendly.
Most of my deaths have been from picking up the rocket launcher and having a mob spawn in my face while im shooting. ~You've been warned~ Last edited by Hakulyte; 03-16-2015 at 11:36 PM.. |

Re: Doom 1 / Doom 2 Nightmare Mode Thread
Not to mention fast enemies and fast projectiles.
A rocket will go I believe 2x faster from Cyberdemons. EDIT: I think his goes fast, if not 2x faster, then definitely like... 33% or some shit like that.

Re: Doom 1 / Doom 2 Nightmare Mode Thread
Just asking because I'm not real sure what you're saying with this;
Quicksaves refers to saving mid-level, right? Not restarting a level from the start?

Re: Doom 1 / Doom 2 Nightmare Mode Thread
iirc Nightmare Mode gives you DOUBLE ammo like the easiest setting.

And rubix, I received confirmation for ya as far as the secret levels are concerned. For speed running they are not necessary on nightmare or any difficulty, but if you're going for nightmare max completion they are, so it just depends on what you're really going for. I feel that since it is a task in itself to beat the game all the way through on nightmare and that speed running strats are necessary to pull it off, the goal should just be max completion. Re: Doom 1 / Doom 2 Nightmare Mode Thread
Nope, Nightmare mode legit make monsters move faster, makes them far more aggressive so they're not just walking around when you're in sight, makes their projectiles faster depending on monster, and gives you DOUBLE ammo.
