Default This game is not like riding a bike

I quit around 2009. Back then I got to (using today's difficulty ratings) FC 74's, SDG 70's and AAA 62's. I don't know how good that is by today's standards, but back then I felt pretty good.

I tried playing again recently, on a new account, and MY GOD, I cant even begin to READ those songs. The rust is real.

Does anybody have experience coming back to FFR after a long break? How long did it take you do get back to where you were? Am I getting too old for this game??!

EDIT: 2009, not 2011

Haha, yeah I guess I still have the fundamentals... jumps are a bit sketchy actually. But none of it feels natural like it used to.

Actually, I found this game to be very much like riding a bike. When I got back into it a year ago I was rusty, sure, but I was still miles ahead then as if I had started from square one.

Well I thought I'd retain a lot more skill than I did. Of course I was expecting to be rusty, just not to this extent.

That'd be somewhere in low to mid D4 at least, with AAAing your first 66+ being considered a landmark achievement and promotion to D5 (and scoring Otaku Speedvibe Oni!)

You're good, man. Just work on your PA, D4 is notorious for AAA or die.

It's like riding a bike, but for reasons that you overlooked. Like riding a bike, you remember how to ride it (play). But you can't bunny hop as well as you used to. (Play as fast)

Same situation just different faces.

Yeah you're probably right.

I'm seeing a bit of improvement, it just felt very disheartening how bad I was when coming back.

I'll ask again. Does anybody have experience coming back to FFR after a long break? How long did it take you do get back to where you were?

Came back after what was more or less a 4+ year break, though I would play the game for a day here and there during this break. I'd say before I started again last year though I hadn't played for about two years.

Anyway, I just made sure to play songs that were at my comfort level. I wasn't doing as well as before, so I was okay with playing like 40s-50s, just to get my chops back up. I'd say after about 2-3 months I was as good as I was before, and now I'm better than I ever was!

I'll look at scores that I achieved in disbelief. But I know it was done with my fingers. So I just work my way back up the ladder.

as long as you keep playing you should be able to recover to your previous skill level fairly quickly

Thanks everyone for your input, some very encouraging words in there. Yeah even you Walrusizer

Anyway, I'll keep at it and try to enjoy the journey back up to where I was. Though its hard when I keep coming across songs going "Hey I used to love this one" then not being able to even read them haha.

The better you get the faster your skill deteriorates.

A player who sucked and takes a long break will come back and more or less suck the same.

If you were AAAing files in the low 60s thats legit, so you can expect to have some difficulty retaining skill.

Some top players like Mina or Staiain or Etienne or whoever don't play for a week and then they come back and look like a gibbering idiot compared to their best, losing like a full "division" of skill for not having played for a few days

There's a quote from Mina somewhere that basically says "the better at the game you get the more the game becomes about retaining skill not developing it" and yeah basically that's true.

Don't get discouraged, just play for fun. There's tons of files in the 40-60 range that were released since you last played so you can build your skill back up on them, enjoy the new songs and files and get back to your old skill level at the same time.

This

and mina quote in sig

Start at a base level of where you think you can handle and then challenge yourself or readjust comfort at the base level so your fingers can induce muscle memory (pattern memory) to greater benefit regaining skill
