I agree, I'd want people to hear my stuff however possible. But there's always the possibility that people will find a way to reverse engineer the game and download a nice, full MP3 of your music without having to pay for it. Some publicity is good, but for the most part, artists and companies want people to pay for the music - especially their favorite songs. Certain artists do offer permission for certain songs, too.

But, in any case, permission is needed.

If the artist is posting their own music for download on their own website, it's one thing. If a website unrelated to the artist or the artist's record label is posting the music for download and the artist has not given them permission, then it's actually illegal to download from those sites. And the legality of things is the only reason to require permission from the bands to put the music in this game in the first place. If there were no legal issues, rest assured, you'd be able to play the entire Dragonforce discography in FFR.

Or you could try the Simfile Database.

We need less dump files.

Honestly, I don't know how the simfile DB even stays open in comparison to the heavy legal issue brought up with publishing the files to the actual game.

It's actually pretty simple (not to be rude ), all of the content in the simfile DB is for Stepmania, where it is a 100% free game with a site that doesn't request for direct pay for anything--just donations.

FFR has subscriptions that you can pay for, merchandise, etc. That, and maybe FFR is public, whereas SM is personal use. At least, those are the reasons that I can think of. Probably not 100% correct though.

Didn't really read every post, so I don't know if this has been cleared out or not.

When it comes to big artists, it doesn't matter what the ARTIST wants, it's all up to the record company. Trying to get permission to use music of a very famous artist is like trying to race a Thrust SSC around the world 8 times in a Station Wagon (maybe not that dramatic). It is VERY slow going, takes alot of money, and you'll most likely lose in the end.

In other words, don't waste your time. There are more threads just like this than anyone could count. And just like the other threads, this is useless and time consuming. Don't post anything else like this anymore, and don't complain. If you want good music, look at popular internet artists like Ephexis (which I got permission from) and Infinite Dimensions (which I'm still trying to get a hold of).

most mainstream artists are under labels or records though, who get to charge for permission at their whim
