why is everyone stepping hard instead of challenge?
i'm genuinely curious as to why 90% of the keyboard simfiles I download are stepped on hard, or some other random set of difficulties (challenge and easy, novice and medium, hard and edit) when the set of difficulties don't even correspond to their level (so much hard shit on novice????)
to me it'd make more sense to step the hardest difficulty on challenge, and this is usually annoying because other packs I have are stepped on multiple difficulties, and when one simfile is stepped highest on hard and a next simfile I choose has multiple difficulties, with the highest one stepped on challenge (as it should be in my opinion), I can accidentally select the hard level and I'd have to go back to the goddamn song menu to select challenge. seriously, why the hell do people do this? |

Super hard files get put on beginner usually because it doesn't fail you out if you fail the song.

Re: why is everyone stepping hard instead of challenge?
Sounds like a matter of preference, especially in the keyboard-stepping community. The formality of these matters is more precedent in the pad-stepping community where most people actually step a full range of difficulties for any given song. When you step more than one difficulty, it becomes more sensible to choose the correct difficulty according to each chart. In the keyboard community however, many people step only one chart per song, so choosing the difficulty is rather arbitrary.
However, there is a reason why a lot of people choose to put their harder charts on the beginner difficulty: placing a harder version on edit makes such a chart less visible to the player when he/she selects a song from the songwheel. The fact that scores don't really record on edit charts is possibly another reason. Finally, it could possibly be that it became conventional after some guy started doing it first. The arbitrary nature might bother someone who's used to well-organized packs with fully-charted songs, but it's really of little inconvenience to most of us here. I'm not quite sure of this myself. I always put my keyboard charts on hard, but when I step for pad, I use Expert/Challenge/Oni/whatever, lol

Re: why is everyone stepping hard instead of challenge?
If you go back, like way back, to the default 3.9 theme, you'll remember that 10+ on Hard is colored red, and if its' Oni-only, it won't get that color. That's the logic I started out with and I haven't lost that habit since.

Re: why is everyone stepping hard instead of challenge?
^song-title coloration became key during DCP, wherein the song difficulties for keyboard charts were first scaled to 1-10 instead of 10+. the 'boss' songs were specifically meant to be red. overall though it's as bmah said--difficulty for kb songs is fairly arbitrary. oftentimes you'll see Standard+Heavy or Heavy+Oni+(Edit), but rarely things like Light+Standard. just common practice 'round here i guess.
what psychoangel said is something I'd never considered lmao but it makes a lot of sense circa 2003 or whenever people first started using Beginner for the 'boss' difficulty (tamayura? vairocana?)

Re: why is everyone stepping hard instead of challenge?
the practice of putting the hardest chart on beginner was spawned before edit existed. the logic was 'ok, I have my hard chart on heavy, my really hard chart on oni and my stupid to-the-limit-hard chart on beginner because if it was on oni people might think of it as a main chart'
the first people to do it were like...zaghurim? toph? don't know for certain really, there just aren't many consistent conventions for stepmania keyboard charting since it sprang from the aether collectively

Re: why is everyone stepping hard instead of challenge?
I always do heavy as my chart that I want people to play mainly, and then oni for super-layerd but not dumb. Edit is reserved for dumb stuff, standard is for watered-down versions of the heavy chart. I basically never use light or beginner unless it's for easy charts that I have to include for a pack or TS or whatever.

Re: why is everyone stepping hard instead of challenge?
def what bmah and puppet said. and patashu. and psychoangel. reach's tamayura and toph's the a la menthe were among the first files to include super hard charts in the novice/beginner slot. kinda funny, because those two guys had stepman simfile feuds on bemanistyle.
edit: Kingdaro, you could choose challenge/oni/expert on one file. the difficulty select should then jump to oni only on files that have an oni chart. Last edited by dAnceguy117; 08-13-2012 at 11:45 AM.. |

Re: why is everyone stepping hard instead of challenge?
well people are taking this really literal but this has already been stated a lot
heavy the color can get changed to red. red means OMG THIS IS HARD by ddr logic so by putting charts on the heavy can change the color of the song name. on beginner you don't get failed out easily, and like someone else already stated the "edit" difficulty generally doesnt retain your score. look at zag's excel theme light for example. it's not on beginner probably because he wanted you to be able to fail the song. honestly it seems like we're all overlooking this way too much and maybe it was a fad started by bmr and no one ever stopped doing it since he started it way back when with dj ren

Re: why is everyone stepping hard instead of challenge?
I tend to use beginer for special charts rather than for indicating a harder song.
still, is like what i pick at the moment i don't think much about it |

Re: why is everyone stepping hard instead of challenge?
Considering how StepMania works now a days when it comes to how difficulties are stepped, I tend to look for the number which is the highest instead of actually picking based on which chart is where.
I always assumed edit and beginner/novice were used for the same purpose: for dumps and extremely overkill charts. I tend to find edit usually more tame than beginner in a lot of the files I play (probably for that no fail feature that has been mentioned). In SM5 you can name your edit in the SM file, so when people select edit, it could say something like "Insane Edit" or "Good luck." I'm not sure if it shows up in earlier versions (my 3.9 theme didn't do it and I never bothered with SM4).
