Clinton's DNC Speech
All the independent fact-checkers out there can tell you that Clinton's speech is not only chock-full of facts and figures, but they're all pretty much true. There are a couple questionable claims here and there, perhaps hyperbolized/exaggerated for effect, but on the whole, it's a pretty legit speech that encapsulates the state of things quite nicely: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...n-the-economy/ http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-me...ts-top-republ/ http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/...ucceed/262032/ http://mobile.bloomberg.com/news/201...ity-check.html http://www.nationalmemo.com/watch-th...ion-night-two/ http://www.usatoday.com/news/politic...ion/57627036/1 http://www.bloomberg.com/video/no-fa...IwOZMH2mA.html Romney and Ryan, however? Lie, dodge, lie, lie, dodge, spin, lie, lie, lie, dodge some more, evade, spin, lie, lie, lie, lie, lie... ^The above speech has been characterized as "an apparent attempt to set the world record for the greatest number of blatant lies and misrepresentations slipped into a single political speech. On this measure, while it was Romney who ran the Olympics, Ryan earned the gold." http://www.factcheck.org/2012/08/romneys-big-night/ http://factcheck.org/2012/08/ryans-vp-spin/ http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/...f430_blog.html http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2012/...n-three-words/ http://www.huffingtonpost.com/robert...b_1827787.html I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, XII, XIII, XIV, XV, XVI, XVII, XVIII, XIX, XX, XXI, XXII, XXIII, XXIV, XXV, XXVI, XXVII, XXVIII, XXIX, XXX Last edited by Reincarnate; 09-6-2012 at 05:11 PM.. |

Re: Clinton's DNC Speech
No offense, but what's the point of this thread? We understand that all Bill Clinton said was fact, but I don't see what your opinion on this matter is.

Re: Clinton's DNC Speech
What's wonderful is he even -gave- us the opportunity (via specific numbers, facts, figures, whatever) to fact-check his speech. Christie, Ryan, Romney? All some nice ideas, some good promises, but absolutely no follow-through. Clinton's speech was rousing, enthusiastic, likable, convincing; I think the most important thing about it was that it was specific. Politicians like Romney and Ryan always talk about the false promises of their opponent and how they are supposedly so different; Clinton actually proved it. Great speech.

Re: Clinton's DNC Speech
Quote:
It cuts through the bullshit and delivers a simplified version of things that's really easy to take in for those who don't follow this stuff everyday -- and yet it isn't oversimplified to the point of omitting crucial details. A lot of the major points are all there. As for my opinion, it's simple: I don't see how anyone can support Romney/Ryan unless they're either ignorant or ridiculously self-serving. When you have to base your entire campaign on a foundation that isn't in any way reflective of reality, that's a very bad sign. It's one thing to make your decisions through an opposing ideological framework, but it's quite another to just make shit up and bank on American ignorance to grant you power. The DNC and RNC are both largely just infomercials at their cores, but it's hard to deny that Clinton's speech is fantastic even on its own merits. There's obviously a LOT more that could have been said, but that's not even the point here. Last edited by Reincarnate; 09-6-2012 at 04:14 PM.. |

Re: Clinton's DNC Speech
I like how people are castigating Bill Clinton for going on too long, as if his speech, per minute, didn't have 500% more actual content than other shorter speeches. I would rather listen to ~50 minutes of that speech than 20 minutes of hot air.

Re: Clinton's DNC Speech
I was actually quite oblivious to a lot of this. I'm currently about 15 minutes in the speech and it's very convincing, as well as being tastefully humorous in certain aspects.
I'll make another post about my thoughts towards the speech and some of the articles you posted -- great thread, Marcus. |

Re: Clinton's DNC Speech
The only reason there's this much politics is because the election is literally right around the corner and the two big conventions are going on. I don't think this spike in political discussion warrants a subforum.

Re: Clinton's DNC Speech
I am by no means someone who is connected with politics, but I've actually taken somewhat of an interest at this particular time. I'm very open to being corrected wherever I'm blatantly wrong as long as I'm not made out to be some sort of idiot, lol.
As far as contrast: you're not kidding. Right off the bat, I was very much turned off by Ryan's tone. When Clinton presented Obama as a democratic nomination, he was considerably more eloquent and much more to the point as to why he was doing it, with a very respectful and convincing tone. Ryan's speech, right from the get-go sounded somewhat arrogant and nothing short of annoying. He states right at the beginning that Obama is hiding his record, and even while I am oblivious to politics, I'm not that stupid. There's been countless addressing about the constant improvement that has been in progress, regardless of whether or not the GOP cares to believe it (and given that they are the GOP, the opposing party, why would they). Obama never showed desperation in trying to keep his power, either. In addition to that, Ryan outright calls himself a "newcomer to this campaign", so I feel much less inclined to find truth within his words. This was the impression that I got in only three minutes of watching this speech. But, I kept watching. I continue to hear an introduction about Ryan, and nothing about why Romney is good other than some occasional key phrases (help me help you, Romney is this, this is what we will do, THAT is Romney). Finally, things get to come out. Mention of the economic recovery being too slow was of course the first thing mentioned, as the Republican party always seems to bring up, and of course they sit down and state that nothing has changed, that there hasn't been any sort of job creation and that we're in this same terrible situation, yet I can easily find information that shows improvement. As things go on, I can't help but feel that it's the same thing - bash Obama, bash Obama more, make him assume responsibility (for improvement), Romney CAN do this, back in 2008, Obama did this, Romney CAN do this, yada. I've heard enough, honestly. I sat through ALL of Clinton's speech, but I only sat through 19 minutes of Ryan's (just over half of it). You explained it best, dodging and lying constantly. Throughout the entire thing, I never heard a word as to how things were going to be changed with Romney, just that things were going to change. |

listened to the whole thing with my step dad
this guy is inspiring as ****. he's the most professional politician I've ever heard. he gives credit where credit is due (even to republicans!), has (for the most part) accurate information and conveys his message with a very huge sense of pride and motivation. I liked where he mentioned the tea party asswipes are the people making the republican party look bad haha so true.

Re: Clinton's DNC Speech
Romney has already launched the anti-Obama ads by taking Clinton out of context:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/0...n_1861899.html lmfao Anyways, for those who just want to see Clinton dominate some more: A famous interview where Clinton talked w/ Chris Wallace -- SUPER entertaining. Clinton is brilliant, lmfao. I wish we could re-elect the guy, since I prefer him to Obama, but still... 4:00+ is when Chris asks the question that gets Clinton steamed, and video 2 is when he really gets going: For aldentron (Karl Rove @ 4:11+) Last edited by Reincarnate; 09-6-2012 at 06:41 PM.. |

Re: Clinton's DNC Speech
Uhhh, except it demonstrably IS "lie, lie, lie." lol. Almost everything Ryan said in that speech is patently false. That's what "demonstrably" means. You can go look at the actual data, look up actual quotes, look up the history -- and see, plainly, that Ryan's claims are bogus.
