Freaks by Tod Browning is an essential cult movie, sociological horror movie, visually disturbing. Especially that night scene.

Edit: Horror games leave me the most terrified if that can help you.

This (start scrolling down to read): http://comic.naver.com/webtoon/detai...d=350217&no=31

In terms of movies, though, I guess:

It
The Thing (Carpenter's)
Alien
Event Horizon
The Shining
The Grudge
The Grudge 2 (Japanese version, starts out with the car ride etc -- some corny stuff in there but also some really disturbing shit)
Martyrs
American Psycho (disturbing)

This scene from Fire in the Sky scared the everliving fuck out of me as a kid:

Although if you really want disturbing/scary shit, IMO you have to get into the books because your imagination will always fill in the gaps with the most horrific shit

I'd have to go with the first Paranormal Activity. If you believe in stuff like that, I think that movie is enough to have you on edge in your own house for a good week.

When I saw The Conjuring in theaters I was on the hype and would have said it was one of the scariest, but after watching it again at home it wasn't as effective

I've watch too many horror films to be scared anymore, The conjuring had soo much potential but the ending felt like a cliche'd mess. (my opinion) I really wanted to see more of that awesome room with all the haunted crap in it. They did a really cool job on the props for that. The later half felt like another shoe horned haunting plot that the horror genre has been bombarded with as of late.

I can't speak for scariness but my recommendations would be:
Cabin in the Woods (for horror-comedy)
Sinister (I loved this, didn't deserve some of the bad reviews it got)
REC or V/H/S if you like "found film" stuff
ABCs of Death had some horror to it but also a ton of WTF

I agree with The Thing (1982), it was one of my favorite movies as a kid. Alien was great too. The practical FX are sweet.

The only movie that terrified me for real was Birdemic: Shock and Terror. You have to watch it start to finish no alcohol or pausing. Good Luck

The scariest movie I've ever seen is Twelve Monkeys. I think I had nightmares for two days after I watched that movie. O.o

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (the original), for the tunnel scene alone.

Sinister is my favourite so far. I don't really watch horror films, but that movie just did it for me.

This for me as well, I think that reached the peak scariness I've experienced while watching a movie. Haven't seen it in ages though.

shutter island's nightmare scene even though it's not a scary movie haha
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVPlTNGv_5c

i was really surprised by it, surreal bizarre horror like that and The Shining are my favorite and get to me the most just because it's not the same old mainstream horror pop out shit you see over and over

In terms of recent actual horror films, sinister was pretty good

Edit: the cult sequence in V/H/S 2 is also pretty fucking magnificent to say at the least

Horror movies are usually bullshit because they could never happen in real life.

I'm waiting for a horror movie that is actually terrifying because of how real it could be, not because of cheap shock tactics.

So no, I've never seen a movie that was scary, but I hope someone can make one.

Better yet, suggest one to me that is psychologically terrifying. No ghosts/aliens/jerky cam/shock tactics.

Strangely enough, I don't watch horror movies. (Yeah I know. Shocking isn't it? :P) Anyhow, the only one I've actually watched/enjoyed was Thirteen Ghosts with Tony Shalhoub. I actually like this movie a lot.

Silent House really creeped the hell out of me. It's edited like a one-shot movie, which makes it even more terrifying because you get drawn into what's happening without cutting to another scene or another point of view. This does mean that there are shaky parts in some scenes with running.

Very cool movie to watch though.
