Would you...
...allow yourself to die to save the lives of hundreds? Thousands? Millions?
Cheery, I know. It's a good question though. My rational side says yes, I would. But I don't think I would have the courage. I would agree to it but only if I didn't know when my death was coming. Edit: Sorry if this has been asked before, I didn't look. |

Re: Would you...
I don't know what person who'd be able to live with themselves knowing they let hundreds/thousands/millions die just for your own life, though it's a touchy situation and it may depend on the situation.
Of course, assuming this is about people. I'd say yes. Sucks to be in the situation though.

The depressive side of me says yes, but it would all matter how. If it's quick and painless then sure, if it's falling from a high height or drowning then nah.

Re: Would you...
Assume such situation exists.
As a human being, I am capable of making one decision. My head will say no. My heart will say yes. Contradiction. Therefore, no such situation exists. Q.E.D. |

Re: Would you...
It's a better question when you ask it like this:
Would you sacrifice yourself for a hundred people if you knew you would be violently tortured/humiliated, eventually ending in a very painful death. How about for a thousand people A million? It's somewhat easy to say yeah I'll die for the greater good if it's going to be quick and painless. But who said it would be? If it was going to be a quick gunshot to the brain, killing me instantly I'd do it. If it's going to be a slow agonizing death I don't think i have the courage.

Re: Would you...
Are these people more or less valuable than myself? Value in the form of utility or possible future utility. Money not equal value. Quantity not equal value either.
If they're more valuable and there's no other way? Yes. Else no. |

Yes, if only because the immense guilt I'd have from the victim's families and friends, regardless of how I die.

Re: Would you...
No, A million people dying will do the world good. Overpopulation is a great concern and the more people who die, the less of an impact overpopulation will have.

There's also a fallacy with that question: Anyway, this question is not about how many lives you can save, but what's your position toward self-sacrifice. You can definitely think at soldiers who goes to war only to die "for justice/religion/country/family/etc.". There's no real win-win situation with this problematic so, in a forced process where I have no choice, it would seems logical to die for others. My main concern with this question is if it's possible that these people will be truly saved. I mean, you don't just waste a life for fun. If the circumstances are not certain and very favorable, I would definitely have to reconsider. The answer can change depending of the context/condition/circumstances. Re: Would you...
depends on the people I'm saving. I would not sacrifice my own life to save the lives of pedophile rapist alcatraz inmates, but I would to save innocent people who have done nothing wrong.

Do I get worshiped for all of the rest of eternity for dying for your sins like Jesus, if not, no deal.
