2 Drawings (been a while since I posted here)
Hey everyone, decided I should make a post here again.
Been busy getting an internship (which I did btw, at a company called Ronimo Games). These drawings are from a while back already actually, but anyway, the first drawing is the environment for a kids game. Everything drawn here is drawn seperately in layers so it can be moved and stuff. It was very frustrating to draw this but I think it worked out pretty good. The blue in the back is placeholder, since we're putting other environments behind it in the game, and the windmill is missing its wings in this picture. This is like, 1/5th of the actual resolution. The next drawing was an assignment prior to the interview at Ronimo Games and is what got me accepted as intern. They asked for a robot (kinda in ratchet & crank style) in a forest environment. I made this in 2 days working on and off on it. And here is the environment without the robot and stuff in it.

Grats on your internship!
You've really come a long way, spit, these two pieces are fantastic, and definitely have a professional feel to them, especially the first. Welcome to the world of pro ;D Good to have ya on board. Rofl. Seriously though there's only a few people on here that are even capable of professional quality work, so I'm glad a company finally recognized your talent. Spenner, Renevatia, makdaddy, it's your turn to get pro jobs. |

Re: 2 Drawings (been a while since I posted here)
I like the diversity we have going here... pro animator, pro illustrator... hopefully I'll be a pro web designer sometime soon D; for starters at least, then I can expand to something with a bit higher pay. Though I enjoy webpage design a lot, and I'd prefer to do something I love doing right off the bat YE. Not generic ones though, I want to become really good with CSS and jQuery and all that stuff to make really dynamic sites without relying on flash based apps.
But as for this thread, proud of you Tritan :B internship is a fantastic start!

Huge congrats on the internship. You had a very solid portfolio from what I browsed through on your site.
Digging both illustrations. Colouring looks fantastic and does give me some inspiration to improve my colouring skill :')

Re: 2 Drawings (been a while since I posted here)
I have a feeling Spenner is going to get into graphic advertising and branding (the cleanliness of your work is perfectly fit for that side of the industry, and the pay is decent in advertising), Renevatia is going to end up as a conceptual artist, possibly even somewhere in the field of industrial design (though you'll need to learn a 3d software package at some point for ID), and makdaddy...no offense at all but you're the least developed of the group, but I see the huge potential you have, so you'll likely start out with small game companies like spitfire, and explode your skill level through professional hands-on work.
That's just what I see you guys really excelling at. |

Re: 2 Drawings (been a while since I posted here)
Oh wow, those pics are fantastic. Very professional looking. Stuff like this always inspires me but then I simply lack the knowledge to pull this sort of thing off.
I'd love to see how you guys make pics like these. I'm capable of DRAWING (i.e. actually making the pencil sketch/outline of something) pretty well, but the texturing/lighting/shading/coloring/etc... I am at a complete loss. I basically stare at my drawing in Photoshop, stare at the color palettes/brush tools, and go "derp?" Maybe I need a tablet? Yes, you do need a tablet...not to say that it can't be done without one, but it sure does make it much easier. Also, layers...layers son, layers.

Re: 2 Drawings (been a while since I posted here)
Even with layers, though, I still have no idea how to leverage proper shading/outlining/coloring/etc.

Re: 2 Drawings (been a while since I posted here)
Marcus, you should try starting out from black and white. That's what I do.
Proper shading and highlighting is actually just logical thinking of where the light is coming from, what it hits and what it doesn't hit (as much), and what it's reflecting off of etc. I said "as much" because light is basically everywhere. It's hard to find a real life situation where all the shadow is on one side. Light bounces off pretty much everything, and it really helps merging all your assets into one whole. Coloring I do with overlay layers. I start out with a sketch and black & white "paint", getting the shading, highlights and general feel of the painting right, then work on that with overlay layers, since they don't get rid of what's underneath them, but adapt to it. And as you go along with overlay layers you can just put a new layer on top, select the colored part you already had and refine it more with regular layers or additional multiply or overlay layers. I prefer this over starting with the actual colors on a normal layer. I can go over the colors until I get the right colors I want, and then just select the color on the go using the alt button with the brush tool. Outlining I almost never do anymore. I always try to get rid of lines as quickly as possible now (if allowed) by creating the definition using shading and highlighting and just throwing the outlines layer away. The sketch outlines are just there for basic positioning of what I want to create. If you're adventurous enough, you can try it without layers, since you can always just paint over what you already had. You don't really need them.

Re: 2 Drawings (been a while since I posted here)
When I'm not tired as hell and have the spare time I might, but I'm working 6 days a week now (5 days a week intern + saturday job) and get home really late from intern. (hour and half travel time)
Edit: I might split it up in multiple picture tutorials so I can go into a bit more detail about each aspect. It would save me the time of making a full tutorial and I can just start a new tutorial when I feel like it.
