Default Microsoft Word and Powerpoint 2013

I have a Lenovo-style laptop for Windows 8, and apparently my Microsoft Word 2013 application is going to expire in five days unless I go to their website and pay approximately $150.

Don't the Microsoft Word and Powerpoint 2013 applications come with Windows 8? $150 seems ridiculous to have to pay, and I think read on their website that I need to pay this amount every year on top of that. Is there any way I can spend less for these products, or should I switch to a similar set of programs with less or no cost?

I would rather stick with any version of Microsoft Word, but I'm not willing to pay over $100 for a computer program. Thank you in advance for your help!

As far as I can remember, the office suite has always been sold separately.

But it has been so long now I don't have a clue anymore, although it is supposed to be a 1 time payment. I usually torrent it.

Nope, most non apple computers come with trial versions of MS office, but not full versions.

The good thing is there's usually a pretty heavy student discount on buying MS office from staples/best buy etc.. I think the price comes down to 60ish

If I buy the Microsoft Office 2013 applications in person via a package, would I only need to pay a one-time fee, or would I still need to pay a yearly fee?

I was able to get microsoft office for free from my college, if you just need something like Word, here's a good free alternative: https://www.openoffice.org/

If you have a Google account or have the ability to make a Google account, you can try using Google Drive. It lets you create things like Word documents or Powerpoint presentations, or if you need it, Excell spreadsheets. It gives you around 15 or so gigabytes of storage for free. It automatically saves edits that you make in your documents too.

It's one time only, and you get disks and etc to re-install if you need to.

Thank you, I'll probably download these applications if I can't find an alternative to buy Microsoft Word. :)

Thank you for the suggestion, but I'm skeptical about using online programs to type essays for college for both convenience and safety reasons.

LibreOffice is the newer most updated version of OpenOffice. OpenOffice basically stopped being updated after some dispute but they wanted the rights to the name openoffice. Might as well update because OpenOffice is dead.

I think the last time I willingly used a word processing program, let alone anything office suite related, was high school or freshman college, lmao.

I do all of my word processing and presentations in indesign, but then again not everyone has the patience to learn and deal with a program that's primarily meant for design, layout, and typesetting.

Ah I didn't realize either. I haven't used open office in a couple of years. I guess this would be the best thing to go with then~
