looking for someone to teach me Finnish...
While listening to Pretty Green Onions I decided to learn the lyrics, however that lead me to Ievan Polkka and an appreciation for the Finnish language. So I decided, why learn lyrics to a song in a different language that I would never really understand, when I could just learn the language as a whole.
So if there is anyone in the FFR community that knows Finnish and wouldn't mind teaching me to read and write this beautiful language I would be greatly appreciative. -sidenote- I would like to learn to speak it as well but that can come in time. Thank you for any help provided. -syite |

Isn't Ievan Polkka gibberish? I was pretty sure it had no actual meaning.
Finnish is a cool language, though. If you really do wanna spend years working on it, good luck, it'll be fun!

Take classes for sure, and supplement it with an hour of extra study (internet, dictionary, etc.) a few times a week.
Idk what you can expect to get here. |

Re: looking for someone to teach me Finnish...
As someone who wants to learn languages of places I travel to myself, some advice I can give is to expose yourself to as much of the language of choice as possible. This means listening to music, watching movies, perhaps even changing the language of your computer.
Music and movies are important because you listen to Finnish verbose. Hearing and understanding structure and tones is essential in that it can help you "make out" sentences even if you have never seen a word or two before. Depending on your choice of music, here are some Finnish songs that you may like: Stam1na - Puolikas Ihminen Kotiteollisuus - Helvetistä Itään Finntroll - Svart Djup Miljoonasade - Marraskuu Happoradio - Unelmia Ja Toimistohommia Apulanta - Maanantai Let me know if you need any more, I've got lots. Cheers,

Re: looking for someone to teach me Finnish...
Good luck. Next to Japanese it is among the hardest languages for English speakers to learn. Rosetta Stone is a bit pricey but way worth it i have it for mandarin and Japanese. You have a private tutor online you can schedule video chats with and they are most always native speakers. Not to mention the online community that allows you to constantly practice your language with others trying to learn the same one. Also has a top botch recording system that tells you how well you're pronouncing.

Re: looking for someone to teach me Finnish...
I can probably help. I can teach you basic rules, some grammar and stuff, as well as pronunciation (I'm not a speaker but I'm better than a neophyt, and I pretty much master the pronunciation which really isn't hard at all). I also know a bunch of very fluent people! PM me if interested.
On this website, Samwais is an active Finnish speaker. You can also try with Laggy, maybe he still lurks.

Re: looking for someone to teach me Finnish...
I know a guy who speaks Finnish, and it was always incredible listening to the language. I have zero knowledge, but as one who loves learning languages, I wish you luck!
