Default Duke Nukem Forever

What a disappointment. And I say this as someone who went into the game with low expectations despite having played all the DN games when I was younger in addition to wasting HOURS on DN3D and making levels in the Build engine. I knew that it was going to be clunky -- I mean, the damn thing took 14 years to make.

But it's just a bad game, and no amount of nostalgia saves it. It's like they removed everything that made DN3D great and stuck in a bunch of Call of Duty gameplay metrics and peppered the environment with aliens. The humor is also utter crap. Like another review stated, it's like watching your uncle tell racist jokes at Thanksgiving and you're just praying that someone will tell him to knock it off, but in DNF, you're the uncle.

Instead of starting the game and being put right into the action, you get to waste a bunch of time walking around this long, boring introductory house/movie set sequence. Snore.

Even the battles feel dull. Ungh.

What a shit game. Very unworthy of being a sequel to DN3D.

That's what I read in every single review. Though there was only one review that a friend told me that gave it an 8/10 O.o

I mean seriously, I played the demo of it and saw the gameplay videos on youtube and even played the game once my friend bought it! And I knew that it was going to be a terrible game in the first place. And what's sad is that it took 14 years to make it and the end result was disappointing. Will someone please burn every single copy of DNF.

The AI was pretty much imbalanced (when I played the game at my friend's); some of which the enemies act derpish and die easily, or act like the practice dummies on CT (in Black OPs) where it seems that they (the enemies and sometimes bosses) would manage to hit you and kill you in the most bs spots that even you can't kill them with one shot. The graphics seemed to be okay on the character design (especially Duke), but its bland in the environment and enemies/bosses. Plus, its basically mashing CoD and Halo together to make one terrible game to put it off as a sequel for DN3D (which I do say is an awesome game and I wished that it could have received a better sequel than this crap...). Overall, this game is just going to bring rage and hate among gamers and DN fans alike. I mean seriously, if you're going to take 14 years to make a game, at least make it seem like you actually took every last drop of effort to make it a great game (ie: Starcraft 2, even though it didn't take 14 years, it did take a while to make that game and the game is perfect imo). This game gets a 0/10...and a 1940s broken mechanical King Kong look-alike. (fyi: this is my personal opinion on the game. I'm not sure how everyone else feels about the game, but this game is not worth wasting your money on.)

I played through the game a few days ago, and I have to say that I enjoyed it.
There were some things here and there that I didn't like and boohooo, but overall I actually enjoyed it. It had different gameplay moments and some repetitive moments. Don't know where all the hate comes from. It's a fps with the main elements on fun.
Ofcourse this is all my opinion on the game and I know there are some ppl that doesn't like it at all.

I would give it 8\10. Because it's FUN. It's not that extreme that games strives to be today. Oh no it's not realistic, oh no it's not blah blah blah, and shit.

Whatever.

Amazon.ca actually sent me the PS3 version of the game (balls of Steel edition), and I ordered (or at least am 99% sure I ordered) the PC version. Bit annoying.

Might be a blessing in disguise, since I played the First Access demo and came away unimpressed.

Hopefully I can return the game to Amazon. The PC version (or any of the console versions actually) are unavailable on the site, so I could only return it anyway, rather than exchange it.

I'd just get the regular edition on Steam when it goes on Sale (probably this winter).

I remember I was talking with some friends about this game, and we all knew it was going to be complete shit. But then we started joking around saying, "What if it surprises us and is really the greatest thing to happen in video games?"

Looks like are jokes were wrong, but in all seriousness, we were right about it being shit.

Yeah, I think we all expected it to be crappy but secretly hoped it'd actually be pretty good. Instead it's actually horrible.

I played some DN3D today and it was such a breath of fresh air. That is an example of an FPS done right. Switch over to DNF and it just feels so unwieldy, unfunny, unfun, and uninteresting. I can only play in hour bursts at a time because I find myself getting bored.

The fact that we only hold two weapons at a time is a HUGE gripe of mine. I do not want to play CoD/Halo, damn it. I want my 10-weapon arsenal -- I don't care if it's "unrealistic." He's supposed to be Duke Nukem... he can handle it.

But, generally speaking, the lack of hidden passages/content/easter eggs/intricate level designs/exploration potential just makes this game dull. There's also too many goddamned cutscenes. DNF was supposed to have that 90's charm but all I feel are shoddy 2003+ FPS game mechanics that I utterly hate nowadays.

On top of all that, the game feels incomplete. Bosses are derivative and lame, and too many times I've encountered game glitches (usually getting ejected for no reason on moving floors, things disappearing for no reason, game crashes, etc). I dunno what to really say. It's a piece of shit compared to modern FPS games.

It's almost like Bug from MIB. It's like a huge insect trying to pass itself off for human, but it's just horribly disfigured and not really fooling anyone.

I'll admit it's a bit rough, but considering all the troubles they went through to get it to us, it could have been a lot worse. Anyone remember Run Like Hell for the PS2? That game was stuck in development for 5 years, went through legal shit, and it was terrible.

I think IGN giving it a 5.5/10 was unfair. I'm about 1/3 through the SP campaign and so far I'd say it's about a 6.5 to a 7. I probably made a mistake preordering, but when it drops to $35 or $40, any Duke fan should get this.

I played through the campaign on normal difficulty in 8 hours.

I'd rate the campaign 45 out of 100.

+It's Duke (while it doesn't deserve to be)
+Interactive objects / Minigames are nice to have around (some people dig, some don't)
+Some small puzzles are okay
+Couple of jokes were nice
+Stage diversity
+Combat is enjoyable at points...

-...but the combat is too often a scripted encounter
-Scripted sections in general
-Piperun
-Can only carry 2 primary weapons at a time
-Weapons available at a location are usually indicative of what the combat encounter is like
-Many weapons are dull / Lack balls
-Regenerating health
-Bossfights are boring rocket fests
-Most buttons and such related to progression are highlighted
-No secrets
-No point in exploring / Can't explore
-Mostly very easy (due to regenerating health) but has a couple of spots where you can die a few times
-Modernizing a classic FPS game can be a few steps backwards
-No replayability

I think a 5.5/10 is actually pretty generous. People who are rating this game higher than that are probably doing so out of nostalgic value.

Default Re: Duke Nukem Forever

I just finished DNF.

Here were my main problems with the game:

1. In DN3D, you could carry multiple weapons. In DNF, you can only hold two. This was hugely disappointing to me because the two-weapon system doesn’t hark back to the 90’s-FPS days. It’s a Halo/CoD gimmick.

2. There are way too many scripted events. Too much storyline I simply don’t care about. The first 30-50 minutes of the game is a huge snore-fest. In DN3D, you were shooting aliens within seconds. It seems like in DNF they want you to do everything BUT fire a weapon.

3. The humor overreaches. Even though DN3D was raunchy, it knew where to draw the line. The worst thing you’d see in DN3D was a stripper with some, er, tassels. The sexual detail is so much more profound and graphic in DNF and it’s honestly really awkward, creepy, and unsettling. At least DN3D always felt like a FPS. Sometimes DNF feels like you’re playing an adult porno game or something. The dialogue is loaded with curse words and it’s like listening to a group of punk middle school kids dropping the f-bomb every other second. It not the slightest bit funny — just crude and dirty for the sake of being dirty. Duke no longer feels like a parody of action heroes. Instead, he comes across as a pervert, and I can’t take his badassery as seriously in this game.

4. I know key-and-door puzzles are sooooo 90’s, but damn it that’s what I wanted from DNF. Instead of some good old-fashioned 90’s FPS logic, we get all sorts of silly crap: Push the balls into the holes, move the steam pipes, maneuver through the jumping puzzle, climb up a Duke statue, slide your way through a moving gear system, load barrels into a crane, stack a bunch of boxes, turn off the electricity, etc. Even when you finally get to do something halfway cool like drive the monster truck, the experience is ruined because the damn thing will constantly run out of gas and force you to complete a side-quest mission to fetch a tank. The puzzles are tedious and don’t make the game fun. They feel like distracting timewasters that you have to grind through before you can return to the action.

5. The level designs are uninspired. Think back to DN3D and a ton of levels stand out as really creative, cool, memorable layouts. Tons of hidden passageways, different routes, easter eggs, and interesting landmarks like the theater, sinking sub, rocket pad, command center, hotel, etc. Instead, DNF feels like it’s trying to copy Half-Life with its mountainy-terrain levels and the dam, or Doom and the generic strung-together gauntlet of tech-lab stages.

6. I like how the enemies were translated into present-day, but seriously, when most of the game is Duke vs. Pigs, it gets repetitive.

7. The difficulty was all over the place. Sometimes the game would be boringly easy, and other times you’d be facing off against a boss like the Queen where you’re basically killed in one hit if you screw up, forcing you to spend most of the battle hiding. Where’s the fun in that? The final boss was a huge pushover.

8. The Ego system was interesting, but later on in the game, there were practically no opportunities (at least that I ran into naturally) to boost it any further. It was a largely underutilized system because all the interactive items were stuffed into the first few levels.

9. After you beat the game, the ending is total crap. Even Duke says “What kind of shit ending was that?” If you know it’s a shit ending, make it a non-shit ending. You had a decade and a half, after all. It was a real letdown. There’s a scene after the credits where Duke basically says he’s going to run for President, but at that point I just don’t care anymore. The ego-feeding motif has already long been milked dry.

10. Overall, the game was simply boring. I got DNF the day it came out and I only managed to beat it today (about a week and a half-ish after it was released). I couldn’t play it for more than an hour at a time because I’d get so bored and lose the desire to carry on.

Ungh. Oh well. I’ll just pretend DNF didn’t exist. When a game takes 15 years to release (because of problems, as opposed to spending a lot of time making things of optimal quality), it’s going to suck. DN3D all the way.

I'm only about an hour in so far but I kinda dig the writing and the game does have some shining segments.

For the most part, though, pretty mediocre. Not 'bad', I guess, but mediocre.

"Three tits, awesome"

Also, I think I enjoyed it even more since IGN gave it a bad review for making fun of Halo.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Halo as well. I guess I just didn't enjoy it enough to get pissed at harmless jokes at it's expense.

You know, there is a good reason why nobody should trust IGN or Gamespot or etc., and that's because they usually give higher scores to more well known game studios or game series. If you search up 'Mario' at IGN, you'll see that the lowest average score is around a 7 for Mario Party or Mario Bros., with the overall average being around an 8.8 (not to mention bigger games like Super Mario 64, which they gave a 9.8).

Point being, IGN will give high scores to boring games that have been copy and pasted with a graphic update (such as Mario or LoZ), and give lower scores to games with innovation (like Brink, which I've heard from everybody who owns it/has played it that it is amazing).

I'm not saying IGN was wrong, but I do think they may have given DNF a higher score ONLY because it is a DN game. I can't say the older DN games are good or DNF is bad because I haven't played any DN game, but from what I've heard, DNF is just an awful game that probably shouldn't have released in the first place.
