Computer monitors
I don't know what exactly to look for when looking for a monitor, the one I have now isn't gonna keep doing it for forever though. It doesn't have HDMI and lags behind on some games that I wanna play. So in your guy's opinions whats the best monitor I can get for around $150?
edit: looking for like 23" and has to have hdmi port

Re: Computer monitors
It really depends on what you use your computer for most. A person who plays video games would look for a different monitor than those doing things like photoshop.

Re: Computer monitors
Does there happen to be a Micro Center near where you live? (I don't know where you live)
They have some 1080p 20" Dell monitors for like $130. They aren't as bad as you'd expect Otherwise, http://www.amazon.com/Asus-VE228H-21...=1080p+monitor |

Re: Computer monitors
Color gamut. A lot of monitors used for gaming that have high refresh rates/low response times have bad colors. If you're using photoshop you probably want the best color gamut you can get. And saturation is effected too.

Re: Computer monitors
Precisely. My ASUS VG248QE does boast a 144hz refresh rate and 1ms response time, but the colors are absolutely atrocious. They seem very "watery" out of box.

Re: Computer monitors
I've got the same monitor. I downloaded an ICC profile and tweaked the color settings a little bit to make it look as close to an IPS monitor as possible.

Re: Computer monitors
for a monitor specifically meant for gaming you aren't going to find much of anything for only $150 unless you get a CRT

Re: Computer monitors
a monitor in the $150 price range that you said you were going to be gaming with means you can't afford to specialize if you want a 23". they are all going to be equally terrible unless you get a CRT.

Re: Computer monitors
Went to newegg for 5 seconds and looked under $100-$200 range and 23-24 inches and I found 105 results for monitors
not a single one of them CRT

Re: Computer monitors
It that range, just look around for monitors that don't have anything higher than a 5ms input delay. I don't have much experience with monitors other than what I have, so it's hard for me to recommend one. For $150, you probably won't be getting a TN monitor (which would have higher refresh rates and lower response times), so colors probably won't be an issue in that price range.

you aren't going to find them on newegg and probably not going to find them new at all. you are going to have to dig deeper than that and get them used, but they are the best you are going to get for primarily gaming in that price range. Last edited by bmah; 10-12-2013 at 04:44 PM.. |

Re: Computer monitors
If your graphics card can't produce a steady >120 fps in whatever game you're playing it's not worth getting a >=120 Hz monitor. They're generally out of your budget anyway though.
It may be worth noting if you don't know already, if your computer can output greater FPS in game than the refresh rate of your monitor (usually 60 Hz), using VSync helps to ensure you don't lose frames. Just recently I had to change some settings in TF2, which was running at 300 fps with VSync. That makes the video card run unnecessarily hard because essentially I wouldn't see 4 of the 5 frames it would generate. Just something to keep in mind. As for brands, Asus and Samsung are probably the most established brands. Acer and Benq are other options. Basically just choose one in the size you want and within your budget. Some monitors have speakers built in, but they are generally sub par to a separate sound system or headphones. Like all computer parts, try to wait for a sale before you buy. |

Re: Computer monitors
not true because it's still smoother if you are getting, say, 90 frames instead of 60 with a CRT. again, CRTs aren't going to be out of budget.
using vsync is bad because you are capping the amount of input you are sending the client and causing input lag. don't use it and find other means to cap your FPS or just deal with the tearing. |
