Paranoid Parents & the Internet
I was doing my homework in my kitchen while the dishwasher was on and my mom was making dinner so I move to the front room. My sister walks in the door starts watching TV so I walk in my room (I have a laptop). All of a sudden my dad barches in and watches me on these forums with my homework completed, printed, and beside me. My dad yelled at me for having the computer upstairs for like an hour. I told him I was just on some forums then he thought I was on some sort of Pornography and Murder forum. He didn't even read anything he just assumed since its on the internet it EVIL.
My parents always read and watch all these reports about people with webcams posing nude on the internet and kids always on pornography. I havn't even been on ANY pornography. Anything thats slightly vulger but IS ON THE INTERNET I can't watch even if its just someone saying **** ('sh' not 'f'). However I can watch family guy and play GTA. Anyone else have this problem? Parents need to take responsibility. R-rated movies, M-rated games, and Explicit Lyrics CDs are not meant for thirteen-year olds, mmkay? Wait until you're 18. Your parents have every right to know what you're doing on the Internet. Don't think they're paranoid and don't think they hate you. They're taking responsibility for you. It's called parenting. Some day you might understand. If you're not even 18 yet, stop complaining. 18 is the magical age where you become legally independent. Anything before that and you're dependent on your parents. |

i turned out okay. but for serious, it is good that parents are protective...they really want what is best and **** like that. but the OP's parents seem like they think everything on the internet is bad, which is extremely ignorant. i really can't stand it when people think that violence in movies/games/music/internet make murderers out of children. that is so stupid. also- my parents are extremely lax on me being on the internet and ****. but they were really ****ing strict on me when i was like a little kid, whici turned out for the better. every kid is diffferent and you really can't have a difinitive way of how to raise them, because it is really up to the kid to decide how he lives...amirite? dunno.

i agree that parents need to take responsibility, however, 18 years old to play a M-rated game? come on now, thats pushing it a little bit, they're not that bad. i agree with you semi on the R-rated movies, i would at least wait till my child was around 14-15 to let him/her watch. and about the internet, i agree with you 100%. they're your parents, they most likely bought you the computer, and if they didnt it doesnt matter, your in their house they should know whats going on either way. case closed. |

Re: Paranoid Parents & the Internet
Back when I was 13 my parents found porn on my PC. Yes, they were annoyed, there was a big talk, but then fun times. I remember that christmas one of my sisters bought me a playboy mug, to laugh about me getting caught.
But now I'm older, they don't look at my PC or anything, I'm old enough to do what I want. That's just how it is, until you're older they will be protective. Be thankful. |

That or just whatever the legal age limit for things is where you are. Probably 21. Also, my parents are cool, if you knew the stories and what we all joke about at times. Some parents just aren't as able to cope with things, so they get over-protective and worry more than they should. Sometimes it's nothing you do and no matter how mature you get, they won't change. Re: Paranoid Parents & the Internet
My dad's a bit paranoid, he's pretty protective of what movies I watch, and he put all these locks on my internet account at his house. But I live with my mom and she's a lot better about things, but sometimes I wish I had a little more space. But..I email this guy who's about 4 years older than me and she doesn't seem to mind, so I figure she's pretty trusting.

My parents' only concern was when I used to go to sites that give me adware/spyware. I'm pretty free now.
Fido, I recommend that you show your parents what you're doing (try to keep away from some NSFW stuff you may have done), and prove to them that there's nothing harmful in what you do. |

Re: Paranoid Parents & the Internet
My parents wouldn't let me watch Power Rangers when I was a little kid. Hell, they wouldn't even let me watch Rugrats! But of course, my 6 year old brother is allowed to watch Power Rangers and Rugrats.
As my gym teacher once said, "Life is like a box of chocolates, it's not always fair." P.S. ^^ he really did say that but he's not retarted. |

That's what its like with me too. My sister is alowed to watch anything I do and shes 3 years younger tha me. My friend has it worse. A brother who's like 6 who can pull all nighters and play gears of war and watch American Pie (at the time i watched it at his house since i wasn't allowed watching it myself) and my friend was just allowed to have sleepovers like 4 years ago when he was 13. |
