A good horror film? Something that varies on psychological and forms various interpretations or just something gory for the sake of being gory?

If you want something that can be interpreted differently amongst viewers, I would suggest David Lynch's Eraserhead (the infamous debut and David Lynch himself claims nobody has come close to the intention he had of creating the film - nobody knows what it is about but people often consider it a film about the fears of parenthood) or Takashi Miike's Audition (I've read the book and the film just goes in a completely different direction - it has more subtlety and symbolism [not to say the book isn't as good as they film though]).

Both fascinating films, in my opinion, but if you want a film that mixes gore with genuine horror, then Martyrs might be a film worth looking into. It has a divided audience really: some argue it's misogynistic and violent just for the sake of it while others say it explores the enigma of the concept that has probably plagued most of our minds some time in our lives; the afterlife. I liked this film as it uses - not particularly subtle, but not daft either - symbolism; it builds a genuine sense of contempt and manages to unnerve effectively during scenes of torture (and not the typical glorified stuff we've come to recognise in such films as Saw or Hostel either - genuinely disturbing work happens in this film, be it if you enjoy it or not). Oh, and the ending; that ending has really confounded the audience that view it - what does it mean?

Another film that I'd suggest that also divides the audience is The Blair Witch Project. People argue it's a terrible film as "you don't see any monsters", etc, or that it's generally boring. I would like to disagree completely with these views (not saying that people aren't allowed their own opinion on this film - I'm just going to share with you mine) - I loved this film due to all the subtleties strewn within the film and there are so many small details that may go unnoticed in your first viewing. I also enjoy the atmospheric sense of enigma it forms - I think you could be finding yourself asking "What the hell is going on?" It's one hell of a ride. True, you don't see much visually horrifying, but the fact that these teenage characters in the film are on the edge, verging on complete madness, surely is a horrifying enough concept to unnerve. That, and the idea of it being authentic (it's not, but of course, it's portrayed with the handheld camera to create the illusion that it is) is brilliant and fascinating.

Now, if you're wanting a film that's mainly just grotesque, I'd suggest Inside (L'Interieur) - I watched this last night and was quite disturbed by some of the inventive violence shown. It's a film I often see hyped on movie forums but I wouldn't claim it's as good as the regulars on other boards - not that it's a bad film though... I wouldn't suggest watching it with friends or family though. Seriously. I won't say why as I think I might spoil the film (if you're interested), but yeah, it's rather disgusting in areas.

I may have posted this a bit too late for the suggestions to count for anything as you may have already ordered the films from Netflix, but maybe consider them for next time? :P Unless if you're still looking for horrors, then brilliant heh

The Human Centipede was disturbing and shocking, I think.

Though I'm not big into horror films myself, I was going to suggest Audition as Mechablob also listed.

American Psycho and Donnie Darko are two movies well worth your time.

P.S. Good horror movies died in the 1980's sorry.

80s horror movies aren't even scary. They're laughable at this point.

If you're judging only by the recent success of torture-porn flicks and those american adaptations of j-horror classics, then I think you should broaden your horizons a bit: there's quite a lot of potential horror films that manage to pack a genuine punch.

Here's a list of modern-day horror films that manage to frighten or disturb: Audition, Martyrs, Inside, Pan's Labyrinth, The Orphanage, REC, Gozu, The Devil's Backbone, Chronos, Jacob's Ladder, A Tale Of Two Sisters, Them, Antichrist, Let The Right One In, and genuinely, the list could go on. Albeit, a few of these films mentioned are from Guillermo Del Toro, but he's currently an influential filmmaker in beautiful horror films - horror films with genuine poignancy.

I think there's quite a lot of great horror films out there that are modern, some may even be compared to classics such as Rosemary's Baby.
