Re: What are the best simfile packs released after 2010
Quote:
I remember an era where it seemed like the charting community existed and produced files only for themselves, not the players. Technicality, and later down the line originality, were prioritized over playability and accessibility. Charters were circle jerking each other over who could produce the most obnoxious mind blocking patterns or stick the biggest difficulty spikes where they were "technically justified" or fill charts with unnecessary mines in the name of "art". And who suffered in the wake of this one dimensional approach to charting? Players did, because they had nothing to actually play, irrespective of how great of a "golden age" it was for charters. Back in 2009 the only thing players wanted were more scoring files because there fucking weren't any. We had hsmp packs and the newer midare packs as well as the classic odi1/2 files which all of us had already played into oblivion. So yeah, no shit there was a reaction. Members of the community that were strictly players had to turn to charting files themselves because the charting community wasn't providing any meaningful content for them. And so they chart from the only perspective they know how to, scoring. This is not inherently better or worse than charting strictly from the perspective of artistic expression, it's just different. How the fuck can you people chastise players for charting and playing what they fucking want to play? You want people to acquiesce to your specific notions of what charting is and isn't and what the game should and shouldn't be but you immediately dismiss any differing perspectives as being inferior. Come the fuck on. GD you call everyone out for being dismissive and ungrateful for all the effort you put into the seasonal packs but you stand here shitting on the collective work of the community over the last 6 years indiscriminately. Not to mention that the notion that all contemporary files are scoring files and all contemporary packs are scoring packs is hilariously incorrect. And personally, I enjoy playing through odi1/2, rfp, ppp1/2, xoon 4 r/b, pmoe, dcp, the uemp series and a host of other older packs. Excellent files are still excellent when played on rates and this is something that I go out of my way to suggest to players who didn't begin playing during those eras. So why don't we cut this holier-than-thou shit out and realize that your idea of the game isn't any more valid than anyone else's. Last edited by MinaciousGrace; 04-21-2016 at 12:57 AM.. |

Re: What are the best simfile packs released after 2010
seriously the fact that the term "scoring file" even exists should hint at how generally unplayable charts were at the time

Re: What are the best simfile packs released after 2010
now we need players making charts for the artists and the circle will be complete

I make files for myself and if others like them too that's a bonus
how any game should be played

Mina, you basically gave me a nice slap in the face, so thank you for that. I made some really bold generalizations/statements when I had initially typed up my shitstorms, so re-reading them again this morning I'm just going, "Holy fuck, I'm being a huge fucking prick." For that, I apologize if I insulted you or anyone else as a collective in anyway—your post is 100% valid and I wholeheartedly agree with your points.

I agree. Tons of my files have been rejected, but I still play them, idc.

Recently though I've made some files specifically for people who asked for them to be stepped in a certain way. I enjoy the challenge of trying to understand what one person enjoys and to make a file in the way they described. For example I've made some files to Staiain's specifications and I just recently made a 333 bpm stream dumpfile specifically for OWA. But in these cases the statement changes to "I make files for the person who asked for them and if others like them too that's a bonus" which still sounds like a perfectly reasonable thing to be doing. And plus I'm still stepping for myself, in that I find it really enjoyable to create charts this way. Quote:
In pack 4 I am really unusually fond of Day of the Manches and Rickshaw Chase. I know Mina has told me he really likes Wood Man. And Day n Nite is a pretty unique kind of file. Also check out Heterochromia Iridis heavy and Shannon's Theorem standard, a lot of people have the tendency to just play the hardest chart, but you miss out on some gems this way! In pack 3 I personally really like Aggressor (though if you're looking for variation this is not where you'll find it lmao), and Return to Fire has been popular as a rates JS file. And Nathan's Ant IDM file is a goddamn masterpiece. Of course part of the fun of getting new packs though is playing everything and deciding what you like the most yourself

Re: What are the best simfile packs released after 2010
There are quite a few files in Shadowpyre's Dubstep and EDM Pack that I have a lot of fun playing. Also consider that I am essentially a D3 player and I'm seriously unfamiliar with charting history and meta as a whole, despite the relative longevity of my being a rhythm gamer.
edit: Good thread tho, I learned a few things edit: I also have a lot of fun with these files. On second thought... I think they might be index files.. and I haven't been playing them as such... Last edited by Shadowcliff; 05-3-2016 at 04:48 PM.. |
