Re: Test your vocab
28,000. I checked a few that I never have heard of but were able to deduce the definitions of ("terpsichorean" - pertaining to dance after the Muse) so it may be a few hundred lower in reality. The average looks to be around 23k so I guess I'm pretty good.

I only got 16 000, but that's because I'm a foreign learner.

Re: Test your vocab
I retook the test and only check-marked the ones I absolutely know the definitions of. Got 17,600 this time. Just 1,000 less than the last time. I still say it's pretty good considering English is my second language. Even though it's (most likely) highly inaccurate, I'm still probably pretty bad compared to others my age. I need to read more.

I'd say this test is probably inaccurate to a certain degree

Re: Test your vocab
Re-did it by making absolutely sure I had solid definitions for each words and got: 5,420 words. Take that Xayphon. \o

Re: Test your vocab
I'm sure it's inaccurate. I definitely know more than 22,300 words. o_o;

Re: Test your vocab
I strongly agree, too. I have a large difficulty putting things into words. That doesn't mean that I do not know them, or cannot comprehend them any better than anyone.

Re: Test your vocab
I think it's more about being well-rounded, since in College you're asked to take mandatory classes that do not have anything to do with your specific major and/or minor.

Re: Test your vocab
... But surely there's a strong correlation between vocabulary size and intelligence.

Re: Test your vocab
Actually I disagree. Vocabulary size can give the illusion of intelligence, but may not actually indicate very strongly a person being intelligent. It depends on the person, I think. According to my results, I'm probably mentally challenged.

Re: Test your vocab
Christopher Langan is an example of someone who tries to be incredibly verbose and spiffy in order to make his ideas seem more credible.
He's been mentioned in Critical Thinking and I looked him up. Almost everyone who discusses him thinks that he is a religious nutcase that is abusive of jargon and math, as well as being ignorant of science. Yet by IQ, he is considered "the smartest man in America". IQ and vocabulary can definitely give the illusion of intelligence, I completely agree with ~kitty~.
