Default Clinical immortality- Do you want to live forever?

There's speculation that ours may be the last generation that considers it normal to have a lifespan limited by age. Advances in cell regeneration could make death from old age go the same way as death by smallpox or diphtheria.

But is this actually a good idea? Could our societies survive such a development?

(I can't help but think there is another post similar to this, so if there is, sorry for posting again)

But then we'd overpopulate =S

Although that would be cool to never die.

Nah. Well, eventually, yes, but we are going to overpopulate anyway at the rate we're going. It would just be amazing to live so long.

This is so unbelievably wrong that it's comical. Well, I suppose someone could have speculated such a thing, but it's so completely unfounded that it's still funny.

As for whether or not it's right, good, or okay, well, I don't think we'll have to worry about it. Our bodies will die; our cells will cease to be able to function properly. Unless we can replace our entire bodies, thus leaving us as different people, we'll irrevocably die.

That speculation is well founded, according to experts in fields related. I wouldn't be surprised of this happening in my lifetime.

I would provide links but I don't have time to go look for them, but over last few years I have read various articles and tv that show a high possibilty of such happening within 60 years.

I dunno. What WOULD be nifty is finding a way to rebirth people. Now that would be cool. Living forever in our own body... ehhh, I don't know.

After seeing Guido's post, I want to hear aperson's opinion on the subject.

Then I will start caring about what everyone else has to say.

Yeah, it'd be nice, but death-by-age is a genetically built in measure for a reason.

yes it might be founded but the key to immortality is simply becoming a zombie and in the movies as scientists get closer and closer they and up killing everyone and making them caniballic death drones.

Quite unfortunately, is indeed possible to live forever. All one must do is manage to get ahold of a VAST quantity of nanites/nanobots. An added bonus to this is that you have the ability to manipulate your shape at will, and could also, um, fly.
The difficult part of this is the problem of how to perfectly transfer your memory and logic performing senses to the Nanite Mass, while at the same time being aware of both beings, as though you were that person. It would be akin to living your best friend's life and yours at a simultanious time. However, there is a limitation to the magical use of Nanites. Because they are computers, they must run off a supply of electricity, or else recharge themselves every set amount of time, or in effect, the being that they are immitating 'dies.'
Give me 2 billion dollars, my selection of scientists from around the world, and the ability to aquire, at a regular cost, the materials needed to begin building my Nanite Personal Replicator, and I can gaurentee that I can make anyone nin the world live for as long as the sun continues to produce heat/light, or as long as is needed to make an infinite supply of electricity over an infinite amount of time.
Want to try to live forever? Go ahead. Want to live forever? Call me.

Live forever? I'd get bored. Screw it. I, as gothy as it sounds, want to die. Someday. You know, it puts a period on the awesome sentence that is Q.

Even if you could have the same aged body you have now?

Look, there are only so many things in the world that interest me. That's a finite number. Most of those would be accomplished. And even if they weren't, that's life. So death...it's not so bad.

Besides, worms should be honored with my flesh.

And I'm calling you out. Extreme claims require extreme support, so until you cite something, your claim will go ignored.

It shouldn't be that far out of our reach. I'm not sure if I'll see it in my lifetime, but it will come eventually.

It's hard to say if it's a good idea or not XD Eventually we'll be able to produce people with no genetic defects too, so I don't see why keeping them alive forever would hurt.

Overpopulation? The effect of such a change would dramatically change our culture and perception of well...everything, and probably to the point where babies are a rarity. There would be no need for it, technological dependance would probably begin changing our brains rapidly. Or hell, artificial intelligence?

Not to mention if we can keep the greatest geniuses alive forever we'll be in colonies orbiting around the asteroid belt or something in another 200 years anyway, assuming the whole planet doesn't go tits up first.

Those who are saying, I wouldn't want to live forever, no one said you would live forever, just longer. Besides how can you say it would be boring if you have yet, or anyone else for that matter experienced living long.

Ok, if we're going to argue the validity of this mystical statement to begin with...

No, there's no possible way that anybody is near this. If there was so much as a report that some scientist might be just a few steps away, it would have hit major news, people would be sending money in to help it along...etc. People want to live forever. Not me, but people. The economic impact of something that big so close would be huge and yet, it's not felt at all.

Wonder why?

It isn't happening. Back to your tabloids, men!

Q

EDIT: Iam_a_maid...actual the very title of this thread mentions eternal life. Sorry, you're wrong.

Well, yes i did mention eternal life (immortality) but I also should have added or just to live beyond the average life expectancy. But in the long run, if they do create some sort of immortality potion from future technologies, not necissarily meaning anywhere in the near future, but perhaps it just depends on how MUCH of the medicine you take at a time. I'd assume it would have to be something you take on a daily routine, but whatever it is It obviously isn't ready yet, just like The Q said.
