Everything you see is past events. Light takes time to reach you, so by the time it has, whatever caused the light to reach you has already moved somewhere else.

If you want to think about it that way =/ As a mathematician, it makes more sense for me to define radians without units, since functions like sine are best defined as functions on dimensionless quantities (so they can be written as nice power series without any qualms, and since sine itself is dimensionless).

oo this is soo cool i am really going to enjoy talking in this thread lol im a nerd..
ok here are my thoughts about time....
1 i truely do not see why light has anything to do with time. light only makes an object apear to be a certain way shouldnt time stay constant at any speed? if my watch says it is noon and a snycronized clock is traveling at a significant fraction of the speed of light away from me it would seem to slow down but wouldnt the actuall time be the same as my watch?
2 time dialation doesnt make any sense either. how can time pass at different rates for two different people? if i go into space and come back and all my friends are 100 years older shouldnt i be the same? i understand time may seem to take longer but it does that when ever your bored.
3 time if like the other dimensions should be traversable but if so travel into the past would lead to paradox unless there are alternate timelines and travel into the future would mean that the future is predetermined unless
4 dimensions like length width and hight are fairly simple and easily "manipulated' but what make time so "special" and before the big bang (assuming there was a big bang) the singularity of infinite density had no dimensions no length with or height and no time had gone by so no dimensions even existed untill "time" as time passed the singularity begand expanding thus creating the 3 other dimensions... assuming ass more time passes by or as of any other dimension does will more dimensions arise?
----im going to go ahead and post this so i can think about other questions ive been pondering

Yeah, You look at the sun and its 8 minutes behind what you are actually seeing.
On my personal note, I do not believe in time itself. Time is a man-made invention to create a system for humans to rely on, a simple organization tool. Take time away, as in no day month year minutes second..blah blah, and you a simple staight path. Time Travel is technically referring to, numbers.
On another personal note, I do believe on co-existing planes.

The concept of time, stripped down to only that which is necessary in our physical theory, and ignoring human experience, is defined as the independent variable along which matter/energy varies. Effects propagate along time. Besides that, there are various other indicators of "time" - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arrow_of_time

i dont agree with that, i could see what you mean, but a person standing in front of you is not a past event, you could use other senses then light to detect them at that moment.

@hr2,
Why are we ignoring human experience?
I know many have different views on "existence", but according to what I believe, there isn't many existences, or co-existences. Existance is something that cannot be described through words, its the biggest picture. No walls, boundries, nothing, there is no end, infinity.

Sure I guess physics or Wiki is the furthest one can extrapolate time or existence before getting into a theory, but just because someone or something cannot be proven(ing) it through numbers or words, doesnt mean it does not exist.
Once again, we have a controveral issue that cannot be ended with a fact, because facts exist to the people who want facts to exist.

There are no human experiences with time travel to ignore.

Individual views on existence fall into the realm of theology and philosophy, not science.

The rest of your post I was unable to determine exactly what you were trying to say, I'd hope that most people believed that time travel was theoretical at this point and not fact. I do plan to jump into this thread though...

My completely uneducated in theoretical physics, and unresearched view on time travel!

Going back in time involves one person only, the person going back in time. Killing your mother before you were born would not vaporize you, just because you went back in time doesn't mean that the entire universe did. You would simply go to another place, this would require traveling through another dimension and therefore would not effect anything in our 3 dimensional world, but could possibly effect the 3 dimensional world you travel to.

If I went any farther it would become incomprehensible.
