Default Taking the edge off of role-playing...

After getting burned to a crisp in my first werewolf game, I decided to look elsewhere for RPing satisfaction. Lo and behold, a topic in the GB comes up, where everyone posts like morons. I try to be funny by being serious, and I just get overwhelmed. Trying to create a counterthread backfired as well.

So what I'm saying is this: There might be a few good (role-playing) men around here, but they have no real place to let their talents shine through. (No, the chat room does not count, because I am forced to use X( for >_<, for example.)

What I propose is that Critical Thinking's topicality extend to role-playing as well as serious discussion and debates. Playing in a werewolf game, to me, isn't so much role-playing as it is messing with people's heads, and is quite cutthroat in nature on top of that. A more relaxed RPing environment might allow for a logical extension of the fanfic writing that seems to have become so popular all of a sudden around here.

Discuss.

Well, that all depends on what we are role playing. I RP but when I do it, it is serious and thought out. The subject of the roleplay has to be intelligent seeing as how it's going into the Critical Thinking section.

Maybe the game forum would be a good place to start a role-playing thread...

I normally think of RP as something that intellectuals partake in. That is, as long as those intellectuals write well thought out paragraphs. I'd love to add to the RP fun if I get a chance and, perhaps, the thread for it would be moved in here.

Or, better yet, we could just find people among those who go to FFR and RP with them outside of the site. Maybe start up a whole new site to participate in. Or find another site where the prime focus is RP.

Just a few thoughts.

But the garbage bin is not a good place to make an RP thread. The game forum would probably not be the best place either. Maybe a new forum for RPing?

I actually recreated an old RPing website that had 200+ members way back when I was 12, but I'm far too lazy to actually finish it off now - all I ever get there is (OOC: OOMGG UR CHARACTER SOUNDS HAWT! ^_^ Can you go to www.someanimepicturessite.com and post one that looks like him? oh and don't make him mess around with other girls, he's mine! @.@) and "k i sit on the beach and play with my sword, im rly strong and my element is darkness". If it was an intelligent roleplay, I'd probably hop it, it's a handy writing exercise.

First, you should know that the GB is not a place to be serious about anything, let alone RP. Couldn't you tell in the first post the topic writer was kidding? But anyway, I think you could make a halfway decent RPing thread in CT, although i'd much rather RP in a chatroom or IMs as opposed to a forum, seeing as how it's more 'real time', or at least that is how I see it. I haven't RP'd in a long time. When I was like, 13, I used to do RP decently in the 'RDI' chatroom at AOL. I couldn't do it anymore once they walled off the normal chatrooms to anyone who wasn't on General setting(I was on Mature Teen setting), so I was forced to use the AOL RED chatrooms where all you would see is 10-12 year olds 'RPing' with one-two lined messages each, and my parents wouldnt let me switch to General so I was stuck.

Well this is my idea for the RP.

Theme: Everyone who partakes in the RP is under the theme of Self-Reflection, Redemption, and Scrutiny of the soul.

Story: All of the RP'ers are in a group of people holed up in an abandoned building? Cause? You'll like this one. It takes place in the arc of Creep World. Each character has a mysterious background that led them all to that room ni that building at that very moment.

Reqs:

1.You must be a regular of FFR. And when I mean regular, I mean over 500 posts and/or here for at least 2 years.

2. You must be known around the forums as not an idioctic person who will fsck it up for everyone. That goes for you Moogy and any other retards on FFR.

3. Your posts must be intelligent and thought out. No one sentence posts going, "Arjhfdjkhkfrfk LOLROFLBBQWTF."

4. You must be able to take constructive criticism. Not all of us are as adept at writing as Mal and I are. Don't take things personally.

5. NO GOD-MODDING. To define it for the non-RP'er I'll say this. A God-Mod is when an RP'er makes another character of the RP do something against thier will. For example:

EX: Will (One character) walked down the decrepid staircase, flashing his light every which way. Suddenly, Jane (Another character) walked out of a door and fell dow the stairs.

See? The person who controlled Will made Jane fall down some stairs. Not only is this an RP no-no, it probably would hurt to make a girl fall down the stairs. ;_; So one more time NO GOD-MODDING.

So, whose ready to play?

You shouldn't make the group that exclusive, you should allow anyone to apply, then filter out the ones who aren't serious about it. The way you said that came over very condescending and modesty is never a bad thing Mr. Vanity.

My personal problem is that it's been a REALLY long time since I've done a good role-play. It's tough stuff, I'm not sure I'm up for it again.

Plus, I haven't read Creep World.

I'd love to be a part of this. I've only posted a few times on these forums, but I swear to you I'm not a dumb ass. I've RPed a few times but it was never with anyone who really had a passion for it as much as I did, so if I got in on this with people who care such as Chromer, it would work out great.

This is an interesting idea for me. I've never taken part in role-playing, but it looks fun.

But would there be an order for the people posting? Ex: Person A posts first, then Person B, then Person C, and finally back to Person A again.

And it's okay to include events from previous posts in your own, right?
Ex:
Previous post: Sally (Previous poster) opens a door and goes in.
Next post: Jack (Current poster) notices a woman go into a door and proceeds to follow.

It doesn't go in any preset order but in order to keep the story going all RP'ers must read EVERY post so that you don't have to include past events.

Ehh, it was still on the first page, so I don't think it's a bump...is it? And if it is, I can always explain it away with some weird accident involving lighting myself instead of the Yule log or something else equally bizarre.

Anyway, Eyoshi brings up an interesting point. Granted, we are assuming that everyone that enters the storyline are all reasonably sensible and can put together a string of cooherent posts if need be, but still...

Generally, the way I'm used to is that if a character is being addressed, the next to post is the one whose character was addressed. If a character is not spoken to directly in a post, then the next to post is the one who jumps on it first. It's a very free-flowing style that adapts easily to people who need to go AFK for an extended period, people who live in different time zones. One guy I know is running an RP set in an environment not unlike the Wild West from an American military base in Japan, where it's GMT +8.

As for your point about rereading past events, Chromer, it might help if the thread creator (the one who started the RP) would keep a running account of the major events that have transpired, what's happening now, whether they are willing to accept new people (and how many they are willing to accomodate) or declare that the RP is full, and of course, in the case of a fighting tournament being held, keeps track of wins and losses.

Typically, most tounaments I've been a part in has a main thread where the winners and losers are documented, with each fight taking place in a separate topic, sometimes with at least one neutral party to decide what happens, which is generally the safe way to go. But for a clash between two highly skilled role-players, it's sometimes better to eliminate the middle man and trust that the combatants will know how much punishment is enough to throw in the towel, which is true in most cases. Then again, I've never seen any fighting-tourney RPs be fought all the way through. I managed to get to the finals of a tourney by a technicality once, but the match to decide my opponent ground to a halt.
