I'm pretty confident the word "noob" is derived from the word "new" as in beginner.

^This. I pretty sure it deviates from the word "new." From there, we have the term "newbie." We take the first syllable of the word "newbie" and we get the shorthand term "noob." However, only "noob" has the negative connotation associated with it. I believe that is the origin of the word "noob" if I'm not mistaken.

I think it went something like this:

1) New being
2) Newbie
3) Newb
4) Noob

To me it's just an word that's over used by BR's, I don't really consider it much of an insult.

I think that MKII was the origin of the phrase, personally. The characters name wasn't based around the usage of the word noob, but was infact 2 of the games creators surnames backwards (Tobias and Boon). Being that he had some broken combos, its easy to see the name 'noob' being applied to people who abused him, and it could have evolved from there. Unless its an amazing co-incidence that his name happened to be Noob Saibot, I'd say that has to be the origin of the word, since it certainly wasn't in use back in the early MK days.

I often use it to berate people who think they're good at X but are actually terrible. I usually differentiate it with newb which I use as person who's new at X.

tl;dr:
newb = new and inexperienced, but with potential
noob = this person just flat out sucks
Wow, I never broke it down at all lol. I always thought all of the same versions meant the same thing, an inexperienced or incompetent person.
