Upon some reflection about linear transformations, I remembered that we can
1) convert an ellipse into a unit circle (rotate to standard form, contract the x-direction by 1/(x-intercept), contract the y-direction by 1/(y-intercept), and we have the unit circle) 2) during this conversion, the other ellipse will be warped but will stay as an ellipse 3) rotate the whole picture to move the second ellipse to standard position, i.e. to be in the form x^2/a + y^2/b = 1. 4) note that the unit circle (was the first ellipse) remains a unit circle under rotation. So the only case you need to deal with for two ellipses is the one with Lmfao, emailing my math professor. |
