If you got to the beta engine, you didn't find it(which will happen). If you got to a brand new engine you've never seen before, you found it.
There's a ton of other things I really want to put into this, but a demo reel shouldn't be any longer than it already is. The transformer will be updated cause I'm still working on that, probably drop it into a room scene later today and have him smash real stuff instead of blocks. Any suggestions for music choices? I've had to slow down that track more and more as the reel got longer haha.

Welp, not all too sure about that one now. It's alright, but you don't get any sort of connection between the song and the video. =(
Maybe I should speed the original song I had back up to normal speed and just splice it out to extend it some, I thought the music went well with it when it wasn't slowed down 30%

Well, I got past the congratulations. Just not a clue how to get past that. Anyway.
Can't watch the updated portfolio yet. D: At school, and they have YouTube blocked. Will watch when I get home though. |

Meh, I'm just too lazy to put a proxy on a flash drive and bring it with me. xD I'll do that later.
In any case, I'm home now. Watching. EDIT: Looks great. As it's already been said: Music could be better. Or, at the least, faster. I like the piece itself. That 3D modeling stuff is awesome though.

Switched the music over.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QTaRkBLN7U I failed to get permission for quite a few things =( I mainly just wanted the zline indycar because that was an epic project. I'm working on something right now at work that I'd like to include in this, has to be done by Wednesday so we'll see, I'm applying to a bunch of places on craigslist and careerbuilder right now. Rockstar LA, Zynga, and a few startups are hiring, not a huge selection this time of year it seems.

I still do. There's nothing wrong with trying to move on to bigger and better things. Animating furniture is holding me back, I've got so much more potential that's being wasted working at Z-Line.
I'm also underpaid for what I do.

Shoot for Dreamworks/Pixar/etc

Pixar is a no, as they use Autodesk Maya instead of 3ds Max, some sort of division of Dreamworks is a possibility, as they use both software packages.
I'm really going to try and shoot for ILM, Tippet, Pixomondo (did Suckerpunch), TransparentHouse, maybe even Blizzard or something. Hopefully something good. I started pretty high up in terms of "foot in the door" considering I didn't go to school for this stuff, and the guy I replaced had a double masters degree. It can only get better from here.

Artistic positions don't need schooling.
Seriously I don't think you've even made one post where you actually thought about what you were saying before posting it.

I went to a community college and took all of the fun classes and then dropped out. I had no major or minor. Instead I chose to sleep every other day and teach myself faster than a school could.
The only class I took that dealt with 3ds Max was in highschool, and it just taught the basics.

Some people simply don't need college if they have the necessary skillsets to pull themselves through the industry. Once you land an interview, that's all that matters. From there it's all a function of your skill.

Yes but i can tell you that almost 100% of the time, if you go to college you are going to make more money than not going to college. You also look much more respectable. Honest to god its the time of your life. Not going not only hurts your chances in the real world, but you just won't the same satisfaction out of life as going. Now i don't have a clue how your family has done in terms of money, but even if they were doing bad, smart kids want the education. America is a land of given opprotunity for a great education, by not going you are being a selfish kid who isnt ready for the real world. So i have heard you went to a respectable college rubix. +1 respect points. |

Well, the reason why many people make more money going to college is because they're generally not capable of self-teaching everything they'd need to know, and they're usually smarter/from better-off families to begin with, depending.
I went to an Ivy but came from a family that didn't prioritize education -- and while most of my classmates were smart, they were smart coming in and would have been smart anywhere else and supported no matter what because a lot of them came from rich families. For many people, connections are what land you work -- especially in a down economy. So even if you're smart/talented, going to college is really more of a signaling device. If I am an employer looking to invest in hiring someone, you want to ensure your investment is as riskless as possible, which is why colleges signal something positive whereas lack of college may be seen as "What went wrong, here?" You at least know that the college grad was sufficiently exposed to the relevant material and if the GPA is high then you know that person is capable. Without that information, a candidate is seen as risky/potentially less-skilled. However, this depends on how much ass you kick. If you have an absolutely stunning portfolio and you can hold your own in an interview and show that you're talented/skillful/intelligent/hardworking with plenty of evidence to support it all... that's ultimately the end goal of what college is meant to teach you. Plenty of people slump through college and get the signaling device but lack the underlying assets. All advertisement and little value. Darkshark's portfolio is totally on-par with the portfolios of my friends from the digital media school at my alma mater and so he's definitely got the ability even without the fancy school. And, if you think about it, that's a great position to be in. No student loan debt is hugely advantageous. So while I'm not knocking college in general, as I think it's hugely important for most people... in the end, brains/talents *always* win. |
