Had the radio on when this happened... listening to a good song, jammin, then... it stops. Thirty seconds of static and then everyone's all ohshitohshit and then it cuts to an emergency news service explaining what happened.
Now this morning they're talking about 8-footers hitting the Oregon coast. I live about 60 miles inland so I'll be fine but I got friends in Lincoln City (on the coast) who found out about that and got the **** outta dodge... they just showed up at my place an hour ago... Anyway this is pretty incredible. Incredibly bad, I mean. Also, now apparently they're calling it a 9.0 quake ... http://www.newscientist.com/blogs/sh...sparks-ts.html Also... anyone have any word on Yokota Air Base? ![]()

What, this has to be an exaggeration. Last I heard it was more like 500.

Am I the only one expecting Godzilla to erupt from the crater in the ocean where the earthquake hit? Come on now.
Seriously though, I hope everyone over there ends up safe and sound with their families =\

If this happened in Haiti it would have been a holocaust
I think the runway is covered by a foot or so of sludge the tsunami left behind. e: Actually I'm not sure anymore. I know that this applies to an air force base starting with a 'y', but I'm not sure if it's Yokota anyore since I can't find where I read it.

idk my mom told me this, since I stayed up till 6:30 am crying about this. 500 would be a very small number imo, maybe it's 8,000. There is 7,200 people listed missing on the Japanese earthquake people finder site.
And think it's still dark in Japan, when the light comes up they will be able to discover more people who have been struck by death, the number is going to rise pretty fast. It's almost 5 am there now. I was just talking to my friend awhile back and an earthquake hit while he was talking to me.. There are alot of famous people in Japan missing as well .. |

I'm getting the same statistics from some questionable sources... the death count alone in is in the hundreds.. a count of 80k people missing seems pretty accurate at this point. You have to take into consideration that the country has a population of roughly 127 million people.. that along with the current lack of transportation and communication they're experiencing atm, I wouldn't be surprised if 80k (if not more) people have been reported missing.

Their building codes are retarded strict (for good reason), and I think every tower is required by law to theoretically withstand at least an 8.0. Of course, since the Richter scale is logarithmic, an 8.9 is nearly 10 times as powerful as an 8.0 and nearly 100 times more powerful than the 7.0 foreshock that rocked the place a few days ago.

I was wrong, Yokota is fine and is handling redirected traffic from damaged airports.

This makes me glad I wasn't stuck in a situation like this. I went to Tokyo last summer in 2010 and this stands out to me. The people I went with at the time are ok right now (damaged houses but nothing severe) so that's good to hear, and it's also nice to hear that the death toll is lower than expected for that massive an earthquake.
And that jimerax is still alive too, can't forget that on this site |

Yeah you have to take into consideration that the people who were struck have no electricity and no ways of communicating. The count of 7,200 is from people who have reported others of being missing.
This is really depressing... Wish I could do something to help. Anyone else hear about the Nuclear stuff going on there? and I also just heard There's an entire city of 75k engulfed in flames... |

What sucks is that aftershocks from this are inevitable, especially with an 8.9.
Hopefully this doesn't get any worse than it is now.
