I dont want to sound like a jerk for saying this, but I felt nothing when I heard the news. Does it suck? Yeah. Do I care? Not really. I am unaffected by it. I felt the same way during 9-11 for the same reasons. And I'm sorry if anyone is offended by this.

Jewpin, I feel the same way about all the disasters. Only I felt like a heartless loser because I don't feel bad. Always thought I was the only one;_;

You're wrong Qreepy.
The Richter scale goes up to 10.0 and the highest earthquake ever recorded was a 9.5, recorded in Chile on May 22, 1960.

This quake was only a 9.0 btw.

http://www.pgc.nrcan.gc.ca/seismo/eqinfo/richter.htm

The Mercalli Intensity scale is the one you were thinking of with 12,

Mercalli!

That's the crappy one.

Okay, it looks like the Richter Scale is] out of 10. But everything else I said was right.

The Earthquake actually sped up the earth's rotation by 3 microseconds.

All things considered, he could probably get a job with FOX.

wtf.

anyways the death tole is at 80 000 and predicted to go up to 100 000 kiddies

the earths rotation didnt stop for 3 seconds. it was sped up by 3 micro seconds which is like 1 second every 3 333 years.

and 10.0 wouldnt shatter the earth.

That earthquake was caused by the plates under the ocean pulling apart and magma flowing out, pushing the water upward and then back down which creates a huge incredibly long wavelength with like a lambda of like 1 kilometer. and it travels at almost mach speeds. (about 700 mph)

when the wave gets to the shoreline, the energy can only go upward since the energy is reflected off the shore, and back up. thats why waves rise up, anyways yea they slow down a ton when they hit shoreline, but carry imense power. So stop being such retards and saying things like the world almost came to an end. and it happened in the indian ocean. so how the fuck could japan be in danger?

god some people are idiots lol.

If the Earth's rotation stopped for 3 seconds, you would be accelerated to about 1000 miles per hour laterally for three seconds.

You'd notice, if you had time to notice before the acceleration crushed you.

You don't need to be a nucular scientest to pronouce foilage. (/simpsons reference).

What I'm trying to say is, you don't need to be a geologist or even STUDY it to find these things out. You are on this worldwide network of computers and servers known as "teh intarwebs". Shortly after its creation, certain sites known as "Search Engines" began to form. These sites allow a user to search for a specific term and locate web pages related to their search.

Stupid people. This could have all been prevented had they bought surf boards and rode the waves. They would have been breaking records, and not dying. Hm.
