Default Transparency in PNG

The program I use doesn't transfer transparency to PNG format correctly. It turns anything transparent to white when I save as PNG. Does anyone know of a free program that's reliable and that can handle transparency in PNG format?

PS for those curious, I use PhotoDeluxe 3.0. It's sorta like PhotoShop, except it has less features.

Let's just say I tried POS- I mean PS. The problem was that when I told it to save in PNG format, it saved it in some other format. Then, just now, I tried it again, and it saved as BMP. I was pissed. Then I decided to try again, and it worked perfectly. I guess my copy of PS is just stupid and it can't tell what file format I want and it chooses one itself at random. Oh well I guess I'm going to use PS anyway.

The photoshop is version 8. It also says CS or something. Also, it seems that this PS doesn't save transparency in PNG. I eraser'd a big space then saved as PNG and the transparency wasn't there. Any ideas?

I've noticed some problems with 8 CS as well, such as the fact that I can't use keyboard shortcuts anymore, even when they are enabled. PS 7 might work better for you.

That quote also applies to GIMP. Actually, I'm getting it right now. Thanks for the link.
