HA! Love the fact that it's a yes or no poll choice.
While we're at it, take a look at the image I've uploaded. Now, separate each color and label them black or white. Nothing else. |

While it is certainly laudable and to a point morally necessary to help those that are more unfortunate than you, it's not a good idea either to go about being generous when you can't even pay your own bills. The US needs to be fiscally responsible and pursue an aggressive strategy to eliminate the national debt before doling out aid packages to every country it comes across. To some extent, Ron Paul's policies of non-intervention do hold water, at least until the US doesn't have to worry about itself.
The best strategy is to maintain aid at the level it is right now, and overhaul the budget such that it is fiscally responsible. Only then can the US think about increasing AID to a level on par with the UN's recommendation based on GDP. I think the image of the US, though, is more affected by how we deal with other countries than how much aid we give. Not cooperating on issues such as climate change (the US is the only developed country that hasn't signed the Kyoto Protocol and has been rather obstinate during the recent global warming talks) and resorting to force over diplomatic tools is a major sticking point in many countries around the world. |

If the US suddenly stops giving any aid whatsoever, what happens if the nations to whom they owe money decide that since the US has decided to stop sharing the wealth, they'd like their money back? |

Sharing the wealth? Like...invading a sovereign nation, toppling their government, and then having absolutely no plan whatsoever to rebuild the country? Is that sharing the wealth?

Personally I DON't think America should help other countries because people should learn to fend for themselves. If people don't learn to fend for themselves They will always depend on others and when that country stops helping them that country will probably fail and most of the people will die unless they get aid from a different country.
This is just my opinion.

I think that we never should have gotten so involved with aiding foreign nations. But I also think that since we've started giving aid we must continue giving aid until those nations we aid are able to function by themselves. We must finish what we have started, but I think we should limit future intervention.

Its good to help people, but why should America help other countries? Countries are not people. If I see someone starving on the street I would likely help them out, but even then who’s to say the person doesn’t deserve to starve. The only way I can see myself getting in that position is if I were an addict or something. Of course I know some people just have really crappy luck, but the majority of people in America choose to be where they are. Not always directly, but as a consequence of their actions. Anyway to get back to the point at hand you can’t have rich people without poor people. Apply that to countries and you can see that America is a great power because other countries aren’t as powerful. Countries must compete for power. Let’s say for instance we succeed in helping all the poor countries. Everyone is equal in power, so it’s the perfect world, right? Well now if one of those countries happens to have a ruler like any of the many corrupt leaders America has put into power. That country could easily destroy America. Also America’s economy thrives in times of war, plus millions of people volunteer to become soldiers. Millions more kill people illegally. Humans like any other creature on earth are programmed to compete with each other. We will always fight there is no way around it. And if America helps other countries to gain as much power as it America could easily fall. A good example of this is pure communism. It has never worked and will. Communism on a global scale would be disastorous.
Another point is that we should help ourselves. America has its fair share of starving poor people. Why are all these people going to Africa when we have thousands of people here who are homeless and dyeing? As a final note, why should America be the one to do this? I think that all countries should work together to help each other out, if that is what they want to do. America is currently the greatest nation. But several countries have economies which are growing much faster than Americas. China for example threatens to outdo America if they continue their current trend. I just think that America needs to take care of itself before it starts worrying about other countries. We shouldn’t go around imposing our beliefs on other countries unless we ourselves are perfect. I suppose it is good that we are helping them improve, but who’s to say that left alone, they wouldn’t create something greater than America. Perhaps some type of government unique to itself that surpasses ours. Japan for example stayed isolated for years, and now its culture works in a way that nearly eliminates gun crimes. Their crime rates are far less than any other country I know of. |
