So im unaware if this has been a topic of past discussion, (although im sure it has been at some point in time) but im curios as to the groups ideas on conceptualizing dimensions past the three we live in, and the 4 we experience. For example, how would one envision a three dimensional object (or space) over time, given that the image generated be created on a two dimensional surface? I.E. A hypercube displayed on paper.
This got me thinking to the higher dimensions like 5th and 6th, with application to the world we live in. The same idea could be applied with regard to mapping it, although a two dimensional viewpoint would be quite the skewed reference. Would the 5th dimension be a representation of all time lines a three dimensional object (again, or space) could possibly take? And similarly the 6th be all possibilities of all timelines of all three dimensional objects and spaces? (Note that dimensions often refer to spiritual planes of existence, which to me sounds a bit lacking of evidence, as of such, im avoiding the topic) Feedback? -Ty |

We can only physically measure three (four depending on your view) dimensions...I'm not really sure what use theorizing about how dimensions we can't percieve or measure or work with would be.
Aside from length, width, depth and time, what are these otehr dimensions even called? Do they correspond to any concepts we can comprehend, or do they all extend out into "other planes"? |

‘Theories such as string theory and M-theory predict that the space in general has in fact 10 and 11 dimensions, respectively, but that the universe, when measured along these additional dimensions, is subatomic in size. As a result, we perceive only the three spatial dimensions that have macroscopic size. We as humans can only perceive up to the third dimension while we have knowledge of our travel through the fourth. We cannot, however, see anything past the fourth.’ If you want to learn more about the dimensions beyond the fourth you should study up on the M-Theory. It even proposes the answer to my question I asked in another thread. Some proponents of the theory now believe that a collision of two branes may have been responsible for the Big Bang. This could explain why the matter and anti-matter finally reacted after an immeasurable number of years…or no years at all since time may not have existed. To sum it up, none of it is by any means an exact science. The theory’s have been worked with extensively and are very solid. The only problem is that one would have to acquire a very in depth knowledge of physics before he could even begin to understand what is going on here. I'm just not sure this thread will get much attention, simply because it is so complex a topic. And finally to answer your question, I've never found anything about names for the other dimensions, because they really don’t know anything about them. They have found methods of predicting dimensions, but still no way of seeing them. |

I dunno devonin, practicality begins to have less and less importance the more an individual delves into a topic. That's why philsophizing and thinking analytically doesnt have much importance in the social-human paradigm. And I would argue that the 5th dimension is the realm of "choice" if, of course, an individual has a choice to begin with (a topic entirely of itself). Regardless, whether it is choice, or merely the illusion of, every action that occurs in spacetime effects the rabbit-hole in which the individual climbs, in regards to (if we look at this geometrically as if it was only two dimensions) traveling from one point to another on the 5th dimension. Entirely conceptual of course, but I still think that its as practical as theorizing about say, Memes, or sentience in other animals, or whatever metaphysical concept you wish to conjure up.
Branes are always something im willing to learn about, as im still confused on the differences between them and strings, and also their connection to Black Holes. Although interesting to think that their collision would spark a genesis of sorts. Oh also, mathematically speaking we can using Linear Algebra to manipulate dimensions (and much more math that im sure im ignorant on), so by being able to symbolize dimensions 1-5, or better yet, 1-N, we can take a look at this math and apply it to reality. A bit obvious I suppose, considering quantum mechanics has been doing so for many years... Last edited by Tyren; 11-15-2007 at 04:16 PM.. |

It's impossible for you to imagine what a higher set of dimensions would look like. You can describe them using mathematics though, or imagine what looking at lower dimensional objects would look like from these dimensions. It's a limitation of the human brain; we can't perceive dimensions beyond what our brains are capable of perceiving.
We have length, width and height in our dimensions. Time, a fourth dimension, is the same as duration. It's almost impossible to picture it, but you'd have to imagine yourself stretched out, with each moment laid down across this stretch. However, since we only perceive exactly what's happening right now, we're like a two dimensional object on a three dimensional surface. We can only see and perceive three of our dimensions in four dimensional space. Additionally, even though you could definitely travel in the fourth dimension, or above lets say...you'd never be personally aware of it. As for fifth dimensions and higher....>__>. You'd then have to imagine the stretched time dimension twisting and turning into the dimension above that one (i.e. different possible events along the duration of the time dimension branching out as length, width and height of the time dimension). It becomes kind of redundant, because you can only imagine objects in three dimensional space, so you constantly have to make a three dimensional reference of space rather than imagine it as it actually is.

I was thinking about this awhile ago. My friend sent me a link to a short movie about dimensions and how we can/do perceive them. You can watch the movie here:http://www.tenthdimension.com/medialinks.php. It has an interesting take on them. I like the video's reference to a flat lander walking on a twisted strip of paper. Un aware it is flipping in the 3rd dimension. Because it only perceives the dimension it's in.
EDIT: Basically ninja'd. Reach you described this video... perhaps you've seen it? The movie made me believe that duration is always the dimension above you. Last edited by Kekeb; 11-15-2007 at 10:22 PM.. |

The tenth dimension video, including all dimensions past what have been scientifically "proven" are all theories as of now. Also, any other dimension past the fourth cannot truly be imagined, as Reach said. It's almost the same as senses. We can only perceive and understand the five major senses that we possess and experience first hand. Without a doubt, there are stimuli existing somewhere (if not everywhere) that we are unaware of, though that doesn't mean they don't exist.
Also, the tenth dimension video was set up amazingly simple. I saw that probably around a year ago and showed everyone I knew. I don't fully agree with it, but it seems close to flawless. |

It is a good video.
I think in the future we will have ways of tapping into further dimensions. I like to use light as an analogy. Our senses are capable of only seeing such a tiny portion of the electromagnetic spectrum -- visible light. However, there are all sorts of radio waves, infrared waves, x-rays, gamma-rays, UV light, etc, that we can't see -- but it exists. We have ways of detecting them and converting them into a format we can understand and interpret with our senses. I feel like dimensions are similar once we fully understand exactly what type of dimensions exist out there, whether it be on a larger or more quantum level. Even if we can't see the dimensions with our senses of interpret them all at once, I think there are definitely going to be ways to extract some form of meaningful data somehow from other dimensions that we can really only describe in mathematical forms. |

If you are truly interested, and care to take the time, there is a book called Warped Passages written by Lisa Randall. This book explains anything you would want to know about extra dimensions; it uses the concepts of general relativity, string theory and quantum mechanics to explain what are considered 'higher dimensions'. I do have a copy of the book, and I read the first 30 pages or so when I was younger (when I was about 15, I'd say), and it all flew over my head, but I think now I should give it a chance, and perhaps you too.
She's got degrees in particle physics and cosmology and a whole bunch of other related fields, so the chick knows what she's talking about, and if I remember correctly, she ends up hypothesizing that there are actually 10 or 11 dimensions (as mentioned above), but all are invisible to the human eye, and some of these dimensions are actually very small. Like I said, I tried to read this book too early, so I was pretty overwhelmed by the concepts - but that's some of what I actually got out of the first 30 pages. I suggest going to the library to check it out, or just buying it. It just might be what you're looking for. |

I actually met Lisa Randall. It was an exciting experience. She also held a conference on warped passages; 2008, with the opening of the large hadron collider will be an interesting year for physics ;o

Could a religious man assume the 10th dimension is god?

well, they could, but i highly doubt thats what it would be, its only religious, and different religions hold different gods, and such. But hey, they can believe in what they want.
im only 13 as is, and this is all very interesting. i can understand, actually, most of this. i just skimmed through a dimensions book once in a library, and understood a bit of it, of course i didnt actually read it all and try to understand it all. i watched the video, and i could see how that could be the dimensions, with the string theory, but still, if we cant even percieve what these dimenisons, 5 and up, are, then how the heck would we even know if those were right? its a theory, yes, but were only human beings. Rubix could be onto something, from light. UV Rays, infrared, all those, they could be in different dimensions, thats why we cant see them unless we turn them into something we can read, or see. similarly, scientists have found that, if i remember right, atleast 60% of the universe, isnt even made of atoms, they are made of a different matter entirely, which they have named "dark matter." This "dark matter" could be in a different dimensions, which is why we cant see it, but we can use technology we have to perceive some of it. all this really makes you think, and kinda shows you just how insignificant we really are. |
