Default Do you believe in God?

I was just wondering Do you believe in God?

Because in my beliefs there is no God, Because it wasn't God who created humans it was humans who created God. Humans just might have lost hope in their life, like a terrible thing happend to them (i.e death of family member, etc etc) So they reach out for a hand to help them and the So called God was the helper. They believe in him like he is this all powerful being able to give life and take life away, and like he is one to make all their problems go away. But, does this "God" really make your problems go away or is it YOU who must fix them?
I shall leave you to ponder these statements I have made here today.

I bid you adue

Well that may be true Privateer. It may as well be. But, it's just why do people believe in this all mighty being they call God? The Bible itself has been rewritten time and time agian. Now ask yourself Why would someone rewrite the Bible if the information in the Bible was supposed to be true?
Did they forget a tiny speck of information?

I shall bid you adue for now

Why do people believe in God?

Many can argue that religion was just an institution established by early governments to control its people. Whilst I believe this is false, it is certainly a valid argument.

It may also be that people find comfort in the thought of there being a god, that there is a shining light after they die, and that there lives all are according to a plan, god's will.

Is there a God?

It may seem that there is no god, or that god has abandoned the earth, or simply god does not interfere with the lives of his subjects and leaves all there actions and the outcomes of their actions up to ones own free will. But I guess this is where faith comes in.

One also has to question the origin of our universe, if it was created by a big bang, where did the substances necessary come from to make this possible? and where did that come from and so on and so forth. When you believe in a god, this brings an end to the cycle of questions and provides a permanent answer to your questions.

Do I believe in God?

Yes, yes I do.

Why am I writing this?

I am so friggin' bored.

No one is really replying because your statements have been made so many times before. I dont believe in god or satan or whatever. I live life just to enjoy it. nothing is after it. Live in the now, dont waste time by blindly following a faith. These are my opinions, mainly because of growing up in the information age. I find i need scientific proof for the existence of god.

I believe there is a God.

There is no point in arguing with you, however, as your mind has been made up well before you posted this.

I believe in God.

I do not believe in arguing about the existence of God with people who do not understand God.

I do not believe I shall look at this thread any more.

i dont see how someone can not believe in God. where the crap else could everything have come from?

and as for the argument that maybe God doesnt exist because it seems like He has abandoned us, well, maybe He just doesnt wanna mess with us. perhaps God just likes watching us and is amused by our weird behavior. like, if u have an ant farm. the ants dont see u or know that u are there, and u dont mess with them, u just watch to see what kinda crazy stuff they'll do. of course, an ants' actions are pretty much planned out, and even while u're watching u know pretty much what they'll do, which puts u in a position kinda like God. you created their entire world and facilitated their entire existence, and they can never be completely sure that u exist (assuming they think on that higher level).

yeah, i believe in God, and that God created everything. how God did it, i dont really care. why God did it, i dont really care that much, but i think it was just to entertain Himself. idunno, i better not think about this too much, or i'll start doubting things again...

I don't understand why you wouldn't think about it, but rather blindly follow? I'm not saying it's bad to believe in God, but you shouldn't be able to convince yourself that he doesn't exist if you really believe.

Me..even when I was very young, I could never grasp be the idea that God exists just because he does. I remember someone said, "Let God into your heart." I asked how, and he said, "Open your heart to God." I still didn't understand, because I thought there was something you had to do mechanically with your heart. But I tried to believe in God..I could never convince myself though.

This is going to be my only post in this thread, but evilbutterfly: The seemingly impossible questions like how did it all get started are what make research fun. There is an answer for everything and proof of everything, and eventually, even if it is in a trillion years, we will know enough to either know god perfectly through his entire creation or find the emptiness that no god fills.

It's hard to discuss something that doesn't have a clear answer or any way to prove it, here's my look on it though:

Why would someone waste their time on a 1,000 page bible full of proverbs and citings, and not care for payment or royalties of their work.

That's all tthe truly solid evidence I have, but your not supposed to need evidence, that's the point of the word faith, I certainly would rather end up where the rest of my family members and most of my friends are- be it Nirvana, Heaven, Hell o.O then be stuck in limbo er,... whatever.

my look on religion

religion is used to help people cope with life. Someone dies, you pray and feel better. Your sick with cancer, You pray and feel better (not physically but mentally). You mother is taking a trip to afghanastan and well you read a few psalms and scriptures and PRAY that she returns home without a hole or two. we are metaly made to have to lean against something for support. but thats only if you have been brainwashed by your surroundings. Depending on were and how you grew up is the way you look at the "higher being".

The only posts I've seen in this thread by people that believe in God automatically assume that those that do not believe in God are not interested in what they have to say. All I get out of this is that it is the believers that are not interested in the other side of the fence. If you're solid in your faith you shouldn't have to be so quick to close your eyes.

But I suppose I should present my view on this.

I had a nodding acquaintance with god through most of my early childhood, but I wasn't interested. Then when I was 12 we moved from the more secular area of southern Miami to the right-wing ******hating Bible Belt that is western Kentucky. I actually became a Christian, and was saved and baptized in Jesus' name, mostly due to the fact that my mom had been diagnosed with cancer for the second time and I thought that maybe if I could be nice to God he would leave my mother alone. During the operation to remove the cancer around a year later they severed a nerve in her right leg, leaving her with a clubfoot. And the cancer was still there. Now having reached the age of reason, I denied God as a deception and an enterprise. Once I stopped trying to make a miracle out of everything, I began to notice how specious the arguments presented by Christianity were. I began intensive bible study and found no less than a dozen flat-out contradictions within the Bible itself. That was three years ago and I've yet to find anything resembling a convincing argument by religion as a whole.

I'm not as well-versed on world religions as I would like to be. I'm interested in Islam, as it seems to be stretched to fit whatever you need it to say, as well as Confucianism, as Confucius is one of the greater thinkers I've ever read. it's interesting because as far as I can tell, Confucianism says "Hey, we know there's no higher power, but that's no excuse for not doing your part to make this world honorable."

And that's pretty much me and religion. I'd like to close with a quote and an excerpt.

"Never attribute to God what can be attributed to sheer, inexplicable good luck."
-Anonymous quote regarding miracles.

"Trillions and trillions of prayers every day asking and begging and pleading for favors. 'Do this' 'Gimme that' 'I want a new car' 'I want a better job'. And most of this praying takes place on Sunday. God's day off! And I say fine, pray for anything you want. Pray for anything. But...what about the divine plan? Remember that? The divine plan. Long time ago god made a divine plan. Gave it a lot of thought. Decided it was a good plan. Put it into practice. And for billion and billions of years the divine plan has been doing just fine. Now you come along and pray for something. Well, suppose the thing you want isn't in god's divine plan. What do you want him to do? Change his plan? Just for you? Doesn't it seem a little arrogant? It's a divine plan. What's the use of being god if every run-down schmuck with a two dollar prayer book can come along and fuck up your plan? And here's something else, another problem you might have; suppose your prayers aren't answered. What do you say? 'Well it's god's will. God's will be done.' Fine, but if it gods will and he's going to do whatever he wants to anyway; why the fuck bother praying in the first place? Seems like a big waste of time to me. Couldn't you just skip the praying part and get right to his will?"

For me, there have some been some very faith affirming events in my life that leads me to cement my belief in god. For example, a few years back my grandmother was diagnosed with cancer, she was on so much morphine and drugs for the pain and cancer treatment that she was very rarely awake, and unable to speak, but moments before she passed away, she just sat up in her bed and began singing a korean religious song that roughly translates to something like "God I'm coming to you, I'm coming to the gates of heaven," and then of course she passed.

I believe that people should come to their own conclusions on life and their religious beliefs based on their own personal experiences and ideas and thats really the only way a person can derive their own faith, whether it be in god, or no faith in anything at all.

Thats my 2 cents, hola.

So I'm the one with the closed eyes, eh?

Do you realize how many times I've argued this before? I've never, not a SINGLE TIME, had the other side even remotely interested in what I have to say. It's always been an active campaign to get me to give up the Truth of my knowledge.

As I stated before, I dislike to argue with people that aren't even going to listen to the other person. Especially when I feel the exact same way back.

But I also don't claim to be open-minded. Being "open-minded" is foolish, but that's another arguement for another day.

Believe whatever works for you. I don't tell people to give up their religion, I just say where I stand. Sure I'm interested in what you have to say, but more often than not it becomes, as you astutely put it, "an active campaign to get me to give up the truth of my knowledge". We've had similar experiences, just from opposite sides of the fence.

"Religion's like shoes with lifts in them. If they work for you, great. Just don't make me wear your shoes."

You all have very valid points so i guess theres nothing really to debate about here. I guess its just whatever you want to believe in.

Why did people write the greek myths, why did native americans have their myths? For the same reason the bible was created, to explain events which were unexplainable in that time.

I agree that religion gives people a way to cope and a way to have hope that something better is out there. People who are religious never bother me because we all need a way to cope. They don't bother me but their undeniable faith in something not tangible befuddles me.
