In fact, history shows that every generation wants to think it is living in the "End of Times." And ever since the creation of atomic weapons, and biological weapons, there has been a real threat of the Apocalypse. But, really, there's no point in worrying about it. |

Most species have based their survival off of their phsyical strength and/or speed... Thanks to evolultion, humans differ from other species... now, instead of basing our survival off of physical superiority like other species, our survival is more based on intelligence.
I see the problems we cause as a way to help our minds evolve... I think when it comes down to it, I think we will solve the problems we cause... |

Lol you leave for two days and suddenly there's another page on your thread...
Well, reading all this I'm now starting to realise we won't have any real danger for a while and that the Apocalypse IS a bunch extreme paranoia on the "Missinformed" civilian part. *We're missinformed in a way because our media likes to go over the top with everything and they don't give us all the facts. Why is this important? Looking at MY (Keymord: My) social group, most people only believe what they see on t.v*

The sun will not burn out before we find another place to live, unless the government cuts funding from NASA. The sun has between 4-5 billion years left before it even begins to turn into a red giant. It will remain a red giant for millions of years, before turning into a white dwarf and slowly cooling down.

Maybe if we were actually looking for another place to live, you could make that statement. But NASA as a program isn't really doing all that much these days. It is kinda looking at some things, but viable methods of a) moving people outside the solar system (because if you're talking about humans living safely after bad things happen to the sun, extra-sol living is what we're talking about) and b) finding a way for them to viably live doesn't seem all that high on NASA's list. If you want theories on how the world will end, http://www.exitmundi.nl/exitmundi.htm is a very interesting read on different doomsday scenarios.

Our sun will not blow up to one big Supernova or Blackhole. The world will end. But like ljw5021 said, the world will turn into a Red Giant, and all of the inner planets in our Solar System will burn, from Mercury to Mars, and we're one of them. But it won't happen for about 10 million years or so.

well.... there are a lot of ways the world could end. I was thinking about it when I was cleaning the kitchen, but, you know how scientists are trying to come up with ways of people living forever/longer? Well if people DID live longer, then would there be more people on the Earth and then wouldn't the world overpopulate and all hell break loose? Meh.... that's just my thoughts.....

A couple of very very quick things.
The chances of something coming from space and striking the early are higher than you might think. If you want to know how many times it has already happened, just type in "craters" on wikipedia or google. All that needs to happen is one that is big enough to come along. However, i dont think this will be the case. The Mayan calender ending date is something that can be interpreted any way an individual pleases. The general consensus of people who think about it often think of it as the ending of the earth or some kind of prediction. In this case it should not be credited any more than any other doomsday date. However, since there is no scientific date disproving the date, it is a theory than can still be decently accepted. Animals, outside of the human race, may contribute somewhat to their own demise, but as a whole, the human race has/is contributing to more than one species. If anything, they speed up the process of self extinction of the various animal species. Disease and overpopulation have happened many times before in human history and guess what, we are still here and multiplying as rapidly as ever. Many diseases in the past were thought of as incurable but it was just a matter of going through another scientific breakthrough. As for overpopulation, if needs be, there are many MANY tracts of land still open for humans to live on. If anything, the only problem would be less amounts of space to grow and produce food. |

Or, knowing that their life expectancy is longer, people will wait longer to have children. I'd also expect that with an increase in life expectancy would come a commensurate increase in quality of life, people would not just be living longer, but longer more active lives...and in that case, I rather suspect that after 1-3 kids, many people would be far more inclined to get a vasectomy or histerectomy given decades more of life wherein they could be healthily sexually active.
