Default The Israeli/Palestinian conflict

So I had an argument with my classmate the other day. My classmate claims that the Israelis deserves to have thier own state because they were able to kick out the Palestinians and was able to defend thier land. Is that really JUSTIFIED? So if I refuse to follow the laws of the land im living in, and claim a portion of it as my own and kill everybody that is in my way, then is that justified to claim my own country? He came to the ultimate conclusion that if you conquer a land and defend it, then the land is yours... is it just me or does that sound ignorant?

It doesn't sound ignorant at all. Uncivil, maybe, but it makes logical sense.

Hm. I'd like to see this thread go in the direction of what constitutes the establishment/recognition of a new country, rather than a rehash of our last debate on Israel/Palestine. Could be quite interesting.

There is a thread about this.

This has been true for all of human history. This will repeat itself again and again. Nothing new, move along.

But isnt it contradictory on what the Israelis are doing? They use religion as an excuse to establish a nation. Yet they don't even follow the basic ten commandments that is laid out for them. Such as, thou shall not kill...especially the part that says: thou shall not covet your neighbor's house. My classmate claims that he is a avid Christian and thats why he supports the Israelis, but the part that I find ignorant is that Christians don't condone violence... yet his saying he is for 100% pure violence.

Jews are also human, they don't differ from the rest. World isn't black and white. =0

I'll also point out that many -many- people parse "Thou shalt not kill" as "Thou shalt not commit murder"

If people feel they are defending their lives and the lives of their families, is killing is the only recourse left to them to defend themselves, they would not feel that such is a violation of the commandment.

As to whether Israel is justified in existing simply because they've defended their territory: If the US hadn't been propping them up for -years- in order to keep the balance of power in the middle east with regards to the countries (such as afghanistan) that the USSR had been propping up, Israel would have been re-conquered ages ago.

The solution to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict is actually quite simple. Israel is only about the size of a small state, its a tiny little country that probably wouldnt exhist if it wasnt for its religious significance, but palestine is less than a third world country. They depend entirely on Israel for everything they have. They are forced to fight to survive. If Israel were to help them build up the means to support themselves they wouldnt have to fight anymore.

Palestine doesn't depend on Israel for much of anything...having pre-existed Israel and being at war with them for pretty much the entire time Israel has existed.

Further Israel didn't just move in and set up shop. The borders of the nation were created by the United Nations in the aftermath of the second world war.

This thread was doing pretty well sunk, and this bump demonstrates a substantial need to do one's homework before commenting.
