Problems with his model of the atom:
1. As Maka said, they are densest in the middle
2. As Thingy said, the nucleons would clump due to the strong nuclear force, whereas the electrons would not.
3. Separating the neutrons from the protons would cause extreme instability, and the atom would collapse and decay.
4. Nothing that could fit in the center of something with orbiting nucleons could have enough mass to create enough gravity to hold the other particles in orbit
5. Where are the electrons? You can't have chemistry, electricity, or magnetism without them.
6. He underestimates the "implosions and explosions" in the way that they are usually irreparable, not repeatable. Take stars, for instance. They either implode or explode, not one or the other.
7. Regarding the orbits of the protons and neutrons in their "ovals", how can something orbit nothing?

Anyway, this is why I say his model was more intuitive as a model of the universe rather than as a model of the atom, and that the atom was more of a by-product that snuck in there.

Yeah, and even though gravity is inversely proportional to the square of the distance between two particles (which would be VERY small in the atomic case), that can't overcome the very small gravitational constant and the mass of both particles, so gravity is, in fact, negligible in this case.

As Guido said, the "New Atom" (notice I put it in quotation marks a few times), was meant to be a representation of my crappy little theory.

Sorry.. inproper usage of words of my point. Neutrons can't orbit as they aren't attracted to anything.

ahh, well firtly to add to your books to read list, a definate read would be "a short history of nearly everything" excelent book covering just about everything and how it works "universe, solar systems, biology, evolution," stuff like that

also, neutrons are akin to a really really hot a-sexual person, everything is attracted to them but they arent attracted back.

oh and FYI... Metaphysics is a branch of philosophy that studies that nature of reality, truth and knowledge... it has nothing to do with scientific Physics. It was only named so because in Aristotle's notes it was the chapter after Physics (the prefix "meta" simply means "after"). Not to harp on ya, just to give some interesting trivia and clarification.

Peregrine, that's a bonus for me, because I love philosophy.

PS: are you the djperegrine working on the Matrix Rayne mod for Madness Interactive?

I think many of you took the word "atom" to literally. I think he was just explaining the workings of his universe system in a way that was easy to explain. String theory was devised in the exact same way, a thought in school by a wandering mind. Gabriele Veneziano's mind. Funny, his theory was at first thought of as a failure becuase it didn't explain the atomic nucleus. This theory is also very similar to the Ekpyrotic Scenario, how the thind implodes, and rebounds, recreating itself as a new big bang. Think of it this way, that "atom" can implode in the other dimensions, but remain relativly intact in our 3 dimensions, that is where the extra energy comes from. Anyways, while your theory may not plausable, keep at it. I recommend Popular Science, and Scientific American if you are interested in this kind of thing.

Crissy, thingy, the theoretical reason that gravity is so much weaker than the other equivalent forces, like electromagnetic force, is that gravitons have to travel throught several (7, i believe) others dimensions, in addition to our 3. This makes for severe attrition of gravitational force...for simple proof of this, go to your fridge, yea, see the magnet? that little magnet defeated this entire planets gravitational force, and there isn't any reason gravity should be so weak. interesting, huh?

By the way, I am a complete poser, and I like to fancy myself an astrophysicist. I know nothing, I spew out things I have read, in relative conversations, in an attempt to impress people I will never meet, and who's opinion I could really care less about. I am also modest.

I thought my thread died a long time ago. Oh well, I got more things to read now.
