Default Greed

Does greed and selfishness propel all human life?

I for one believe it does.

I think greed is a very esential part of Human life.

If there wasnt greed, people wouldnt want things as much, and wouldnt pursue their ideas and dreams. So we might be THOUSANDS of years behind technology wise without this human emotion. I think it is nessisarry, but i know it can sometimes be annoyoing.

I completley agree with you. It is an essential part of life, and yet people still frown upon it.

The world is messed.

Greed is a thing tht can bring pain upon people as well though...greed has led to unneeded deaths and unwanted robberies. Don't get me wrong though, greed is something people do need to flourish but it is something that is looked down upon due to all the bad things that happen because of it. Robberies to greed of money and all, they can lead to death an such. In my opinion, greed is something that should be not be used so aggressively with...

Don't confuse greed with ambition. Greed will make people steal from the poor, ambition will make somebody push themselves further than they thought they could.

However, they are traits that often go together. Am I greedy because I want to learn something?

Am I greedy because I want enough money so I don't have to work until I'm exhausted 6 days a week?

I believe greed is not essential.

There is need, and there is want.

A great example is the beginning of The Gods Must Be Crazy, a pretty old movie, but very insightful. It compares and contrasts our complex modern society to the very simple and happy lives of an african tribe. One of my favorite quote comes from that movie, "The simpler we make life, the more complicated it becomes. We have to spend around 15 years of our lives in school just so we know how to survive in it!"

It can be argues that ambition leads to greed. The self perpetuation of our race can be construed as greed. Without greed, we wouldn't be where we were today. Greed does lead to death, but not just robberies. Vengeance is greed. Life is greed.

If you're Freud, you believe that sex is what drives everyone to do everything. And that money is simply a way to get that.

Desire (non-sexual) is the base of all human society. Desire drives people to have better lives and achieve greater things. Desire is good because without it we would all be dead (the desire to live).

Greed is the excess of desire. Too much desire means poor moral decisions and many other unpleasant occurances. Greed is frowned upon because it shows a lack of restraint and willingness to cause pain for others.
