Default French Ban Religious Items

By ELAINE GANLEY, Associated Press Writer

PARIS - France's lower house of parliament on Tuesday voted overwhelmingly to ban students from wearing Islamic head scarves and other religious apparel in public schools.

The measure, which would outlaw conspicuous religious clothing and symbols in classrooms, was approved 494-36. It goes to the Senate, where little opposition was expected, in early March.

The measure was expected to take effect in September.

The bill stipulates that "in schools, junior high schools and high schools, signs and dress that conspicuously show the religious affiliation of students are forbidden." It would not apply to students in private schools or to French schools in other countries.

Sanctions for refusing to remove conspicuous religious signs and clothing would range from a warning to temporary suspension from school to expulsion.

The bill got far more than the 288 votes in the 577-seat National Assembly that were needed to pass — a measure of its wide popularity within France, demonstrated in repeated public opinion polls.

French leaders hope a law will quell the debate over head scarves that has divided France since 1989, when two young girls were expelled from their school in Creil, outside Paris, for wearing head scarves. Scores more have been expelled since then.

The government argues that a law is needed to protect France's secular traditions and to diminish rising Islamic fundamentalism. The ban would apply to Jewish skullcaps and large Christian crosses as well as the head scarf.

"This law is for us indispensable," said Martine David, a Socialist lawmaker. Teachers "need a clear judicial framework."

Parliament's majority party — the Union for a Popular Movement — agreed Thursday to a last-minute amendment by the Socialists that calls for an evaluation of the law a year after it takes effect.

Lawmakers want the option of being able to alter its language from "conspicuous" to "visible" if necessary in order to eliminate vagueness or ambiguity.

The governing UMP party also added an amendment to ensure that mediation takes place before any sanctions are imposed — another Socialist suggestion.

Ordinarily, I would have had a problem with this ( and, indeed, most things French). But since this law treats all religions equally, I find it agreeable. And Cenright, this isn't considered really religious debate, right, just a debate the infringement of Civil Liberties.

This is a terrible offense on freedom of speech and expression. And people wonder why the French hate us.

Firstl;y, you're all dumbasses for your retarded views.

Secondly, you dipshits didnt even provide reasonning behind your thinking, and I bet you still can't. You just completely flamed without any good reasonning or logical backing behind it.

Thirdly, what you don't seem to understand, is the fact that France is a very, very secular country. Menaing, seperation of state and church all the way. You people wouldnt know about what secular really is since your fucking president mentions god every other word in presidential speeches; which happens to be an impeachable offence in France.
they banned publicly showing headscarves because it was being unfair to all the other religions. why should someone be able to wear a headscarf in public (remember, you're allowed to wear whatever the hell you want in privacy), when other can't wear a yamaka?

Fourthly, the French didn't hate the Americans. They just think your culture is the biggest joke ever.

I agree with pretty much everything you said except for this..the French can't stand us, and the feeling is mutual. Seriously, like every civilized country hates Americans (except for the Canadians, since, you know, we keep their asses from being nuked).

You have to remember that the idea of America with its free press, speech, and oppurtunity, is still considered a novel idea throughout the world. America was based on this free tradition. Well we certainly could be freer, but it wont happen because we have a tradition and it will stay fairly close to it. Europe, Asia, and Africa all have their traditions. Did you know that almost all European beaches allow women to go topless? Some are nude beaches, and these are public beaches.

It is almost all about tradition. Some things change and adapt, but the base culture is always there.

And the French don't hate us. They don't like our politics, (we don't like theirs) but if you even TRY to speak the language they are satisfied. They know that you don't know it well, but they like to see the attempt. That way they can see that you are willing enough to say something, even if you are saying it wrong.

Me, the board's über-conservative religious guy, that thinks the US goes too far in it's stance against religions in the school place, don't think the French parliament was unjust in that decision. For one, it does treat all religions equally. I'd make a movement that they should ban shirts that say something to the extent "GOD IS A LIE" or something, just to make sure it's literally even, on every side.

At least they don't suspend people for saying a prayer at lunchtime before they eat a meal.

We are also secular my friend, though our esteemed President endorses religion on a personal level, he most definitely doesn't advocate it others, not his specific religion anyway, if he did the hardliner democrats would crack on him so hard he wouldn't have an ass left to chew. However he does advocate a strong set of morals and ethics, which usually looks like advocation of religion to the untrained eye, because religion is a controlling system, set up for the moral and ethical direction of society.

Nonetheless they are limiting the ability for people to practice their religious beliefs.
