Default Smoking as a Public Health Issue

Smoking is a constant anoyance, from the dangers of second hand smoke to very real chalenges of avoiding falling off the cliff and onto the slippery slope of nicotine usage. There are several things I can think of that could reduce smoking without completely banning it. Feel free to post your feelings on any of them or on the issue of tabbaco usage in genral.

1. Ban or limit adveretising of tobacco products. This would reduce the ways that tobbaco buisnesses could tempt young people into smoking. A deffinite option and one that would have minimal impact on any industry other than tobbaco.
2. A special tax on tobbaco products. Driving up the cost would help fund our government and provide another incentive to stay off of tabaco. Kill two birds with one stone.
3.Ban smoking in certain areas like cars and subway stations. No real affect on industry or smokers but would reduce the amount of second hand smoke.
4.Do nothing. This would... Do nothing. Suprise.

Voila. Please feel free to coment or state another way that smoking could be reduced.

Smoking is banned in many public places, and they already have special taxes on tobacco products, I think. I'm not certain, though, as I've never smoked and never will. It's already hard enough to breathe behind a smoker, and it smells terrible, so there's no way I'd start.

Also, limiting advertising might come across as unconstitutional to some people. You have to remember, this is America. People, well, they like to get what they want.

Are you both certain that 2 isn't already happening?

I don't care about advertising. Raising the special tax just pisses them off even more. I just think it should be banned in public places. If they're going to kill themselves, at least make them do it in their own place.

In New York (I think all over the state -- I know centrel NY it is) smoking in public facilities is illegal. This includes bars, restaurants, stadiums, libraries, schools. Parks are ok, but now they are thinking of banning smoking outside of hospitals.

Bars, restaurants and stadiums aren't public facilities. It should be left up to the individual owners in those cases.

Smoking should be banned from everywhere and every place in the world.
CIGARETTES SHOULD BE ABOLISHED.

Yeah, you tell the world what they can't do. There's nothing as unforgivable as freedom to do stupid things, especially when they don't hurt others.

I'm so against cigarettes that I voted for all of the choices except nothing. I'm really bothered by all the people I see smoking at my school.

Edit: And yes, smoking does hurt others, and I've heard the secondary smoke that comes out is about 4x as bad as the other smoke that goes through the filter.

It doesn't hurt others when it's done in the privacy of ones own home, or in a location where everyone knows and accepts that smoking is going to occur.

I'm aware of this. Smoking at school is unacceptable because a school is a public establishment, but preventing people from doing things that only hurt themselves is an unneccessary abridgement of freedom.

Yeah, because smoking in a house full of non-smokers is cool.
