JESUS IS NOT GOD.
sherbtail, maybe you should look into other religion's views on god before you say something so idiotic. Personally, I don't think the Apocalypse isn't going to happen. From a scientific standpoint, the Earth's population is growing so quickly that we're going to overreach ourselves. Eventually, people will just starve off and die. Of course, this is already happening in every country in the world, whether it be homeless people or actual inhabitants. If an Apocalypse does happen, it's not going to be God's wrath - it's going to be man's stupidity. Not saying God doesn't exist, but doesn't the whole Apocalypse thing seem a bit far-fetched to you? Which brings me to say that the Torah/Bible/Koran/whatever you read is not really much more than stories to teach us how to live by. If you take them literally, then that's your choice and I respect that. Last edited by Angel Shiyue; 01-6-2007 at 12:30 PM.. |

That is to say unless we either have two children per family just to replace ourselves or find more ways to grow food. While money does play a factor, it's not the only one. Last edited by Angel Shiyue; 01-6-2007 at 02:20 PM.. |

angel, that food argument is kind of stupid. if we didn't have enough food to support everyone then some people would die off but the world ending from that? everyone would have to die at the same time for that to happen, which is practically impossible.
edit: also, global warming isn't as bad as everyone would have you believe. even in a worst-case scenario where the earth's average temperature is much higher, people wouldn't die out because people would inevitably adapt. Last edited by vvav; 01-6-2007 at 03:41 PM.. |

And also, in most rich countries we've already started having 2 children or less and as more 3rd world countries grow richer they will start having only 2 children too so the worlds population will eventually level out, although its been estimated it'll probably be about 9 billion before this happens |

I believe there is no God; only a blind faith (not to offend anyone).

Any ways the orignal poster seemed to attack America's competition, well nothing wrong with that, I agree would be better if all humans were perfectly non ambitious, but were not, and therefore to account for that a free market system like we have is the best economic system possible. |

Producing food enough to feed the population is not necessarily the problem in itself. You are correct to assume that over population is a problem, but there are much larger problems than actually starving to death. Statistical growth models show that populations grow and level off according to their development. As such, countries that are undeveloped do not grow, developing countries grow exponentially and developed countries do not grow (More specifically, do not grow means to grow very slowly :P). Populations develop and then their population levels off, and as such it is possible to support such a population food wise (disregarding political issues.) Also, the USA has almost a 0 natural growth, and many european countries have a negative growth rate. The REAL growth is coming from immigration. The bigger problem lies in the use of other resources like oil and fuels that cannot be regenerated. We expend resources on this planet constantly at an exponential rate that will not be recovered. It is rather self evident that the developed countries of the world are going to collapse in on themselves if there are not critical changes made over the next few centuries. We will continue to expend fuels and oils until there is no profit to be made on it. A crisis will likely insure, assuming we don't start thinking ahead. Fuel in itself is not a big problem, because there are other ways to run an engine using supplies that regenerate. Nuclear power could also easily sustain the planet with ease and efficiency. However, oils are used to make just about...everything. What are we going to do without oil?
