Before we begin: I am aware that I am biased in Israel's side. You do not need to point it out to me.
So, as some of you might know, I'm Israeli and I moved to America as a small child. Lately we've been playing a 'war game' in my AP Modern History class and I had to write a paper on if I support any war or not. This got me thinking: as an Israeli, should I or should I not be supporting the violence going on right now? As an American, I don't. However, as an Israeli, I sometimes find myself reading articles that attack the Israeli Defense Forces (now on refered to as the IDF) with a disgust I do not usually exhibit so freely. My elder brother Asaf served in the IDF and had told us of something that you will most likely not hear on the news: the IDF has a policy of helping people, whether it be a comrade or an enemy. Asaf's good friend was a field doctor and more than once, he was called upon to help Palestinians who had been hurt. To be fair, however, they were not allowed (and would not, anyway) to help those who fired upon them. Take into account this quote from the IDF's code of ethics: "Purity of Arms - 'The IDF servicemen and women will use their weapons and force only for the purpose of their mission, only to the necessary extent and will maintain their humanity even during combat. IDF soldiers will not use their weapons and force to harm human beings who are not combatants or prisoners of war, and will do all in their power to avoid causing harm to their lives, bodies, dignity and property'." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israel_Defense_Forces) So why am I putting all of this here? I want to see what everyone's view is on the matter. I know that some people will not care and other will not understand but like it or not, this conflict might evolve into the war of our generation. |

Support a war, don't, it matters little.
Blame European imperial colonialism and Nazism. Soldiers only serve a few purposes, the protect the people, to kill on behalf of the people, and to die for the people. The highest honor in any military service is to die in order to save the lives of noncombatants. War will always exist; a peaceful society will never endure, it's in our nature as human beings, our selfish actions, that will dictate the outcome of our species. Many different military organizations are committed to helping people, though no one organization can truly say that it's been completely altruistic in nature most "civilized" military groups have done something, are doing something, will do something to help others.
