I highly recommend using photoshop and following the steps if you can lol. That's the most viable way to do it.

The results from Paint.net nonetheless look pretty cool, good use of using the tools at hand. I dig that last one Trumpet.

And Arntonach, that for SOME REASON reminds me strongly of a lens flare from the mothership of E.T., some faint childhood memory has been tickled.
