From what I've read, you should invest in a hard pad. It's a little expensive, but the only thing the soft pad is basically good is learning to play DDR. If you really have the money, go for a metal pad. it's much more realistic.

I'm also saving up, and I plan on getting the hard pad for now. It's gonna be a while though.
